To me it really didn't matter whether or not they get away with it. What is important is Matt's reaction. An act that had its seed in grief has done nothing to allay that grief. He appears more burdened that ever, and cannot turn to his wife for solace. Life sucks.

Great point! And to carry that further, its like he's in an endless loop. What does he do now to alleviate the despair of his murder. Then what does he do to alleviate that and so on and so on....
Kind of like the ending of Se7en. His grief over the loss of his wife was so strong that he could not help himself, yet in the end it doesn't solve anything it only complicates matters.

This is how Unfaithful is like this movie. In the end we are left hanging as to whether they will get caught, but we get the feeling that even if they don't, the guilt will be worse.
