I just started my 4th month of accutane. I am finally seeing my face clear, day by day. Extremely dry skin, but applying moisturizer helps a great deal.
It is perfectly normal to be scared and doubtful before beginning your accutane treatment...and during your treatment! There are many side effects...but remember, everyone is different, and the majority of patients have just a few side effects (dry skin, dry nose, more sensitive skin).
You probably read many posts about the "initial breakout" period. This is also different for everyone. Some don't even notice a difference in their acne, some see a slight increase in breakouts, and some see a significant breakout. Luckily, I didn't even notice a change.
As for summer and the sun...be careful. Accutane increases your skin's sensitivity and you will burn easy. It is best to avoid the sun, but be sure to wear SPF 45 sunscreen if you are out in the sun. I wouldn't lay out at the beach, but hey, everyone's different. My skin has been very sensitive to the sun.
Anyways, in my opinion, if you have tried other medications and still have no luck, go for the accutane...believe me and the majority of others on this site. Yes, you will have dry skin and most likely a dry nose...and you will be battling dry lips every day. I have never paid so much attention to my face, after beginning my treatment!
To me, the side effects are worth it, and remember, you can always stop the treatment if they are too harsh. It's worth a shot.
Patience is the key. Everyone's results are different and happen at different intervals throughout treatment.
Good luck! Hopefully others can give you some more advice and tips.
