Historical uses of herbs

As previously mentioned,I have a list of source material that may be of interest.All of the following are published by Stuart Press.They are in paperback format and generally cost in the region of a few pounds.They cover all aspects of herbal use.

Thank you so much for posting this list, Linda, it's amazing! You must have an absolute treasure trove of knowledge in this area and I'm really looking forward to any articles you find time to write!

You made me wonder if people were interested in earlier Herblore, so I went to search amongst the Anglo-Saxon books. Here are a few

Anglo-Saxon Food & Drink: Production, Processing, Distribution & Consumption by Ann Hagen £19•95 ISBN 1-898281-41-6

Aspects of Anglo-Saxon Magic by Bill Griffiths £19.95 ISBN 1-898281-33-5 (This has the nine herb charm, which is wonderful!)

Leechcraft: Early English Charms, Plantlore and Healing by Stephen Pollington ISBN 1-898281-47-4 (They are producing a paperback version of this for £25.00 which will be ready for February 2008)

Tastes of Anglo-Saxon England by Mary Savelli £4.95 ISBN 1-898281-28-9

The Mead Hall: The feasting tradition in Anglo-Saxon England by Stephen Pollington £16•95 ISBN 1-898281-30-0

To go even earlier

Prehistoric Cooking by Jacqui Wood £16.99 ISBN 0-7524-1943-9 (This is a wonderful book and has a really interesting chapter on herbs and spices.)

The Roman Cookery of Apicus by John Edwards (This was published in paperback in 1985 and is available used on Amazon for 1p!!)

Excellent stuff from you both Keep it coming, think I'll have a wander over to Amazon now lol! I have a couple of English Heritage Cook Books that I keep meaning to add the others in the series to. these are:-

Tudor Cookery: Recipes and History (Cooking Through the Ages) by Peter Brears - ISBN-10: 1850748683

Medieval Cookery: Recipes and History (Cooking Through the Ages) by Maggie Black - ISBN-10: 1850748675

Others in the series cover Roman, Stuart, Georgian, Victorian and Ration Book Cookery. Not as in depth as the books suggested by Linda and Sarah but they do have some good historical facts and some good examples of recipes of the time.
