I'm pleased to report that we appear to have a complete collection of our journal, from what appears to be the first issue in 1975 to the present day. I will be documenting all the contents and scanning and creating pdf's of each journal, but that will be a long term project, but one I've put on my task list, along with scanning and making digital archives of all our photos, documents and publications. From then I'll add a computer to the library, if we can hopefully get one donated. And low quality images of all the archive material will be able to be viewed in the library by appointment by members and researchers. Higher resolution copies will then be made available on CD for a fee. Of course this project is a way off, but its in the pipeline.
From what I've gleaned so far, the very first issue of the journal was published when we were still the Society of Herbalists back in 1975. In 1976 that changed, and we became The Herb Society. There are some fascinating historical facts about the Society to be read in those magazines from the Chairman's reports and the Editorials, and some wonderful articles. And several issues have answered questions I've asked and nobody seemed to know the answer to!
What I'm curious to know from anybody that has been a member since before 1975... Did the Society of Herbalists publish a journal prior to 1975, if they did when did it start and was it still the Herbal Review?
During my visit to the library on Tuesday I managed to finally unpack boxes of books that had been packed since the move from when we were based at the National Herb Centre. And cam eacross some real and surprising gems that will help us trace the changes in the Society. All fascinating stuff as I hope some of you will agree? I'll keep you all informed of developments to the 'archives' project.
