Variegated Basil 'Pesto Perpetuo'

This basil may not be new to some of you, but I went to the garden centre yesterday to buy some canes for the peas and beans (don't ask what else I came back with lol!) and I found this, not in the herb section funnily enough, but with the salad and veg plants. It's called "Pesto Perpetuo" and is a variegated form of Greek columnar basil. It's sterile, which means it doesn't produce seeds and I've read it also doesn't produce flowers, although I'll wait and see if this is the case.

It's a tender perennial, and like the African blue basil, it can be overwintered indoors and put out again year after year. Some info on the net I've seen about this basil is that it has a lemony flavour, but to me it doesn't. it just has a strong and wonderful basil fragrance great for cooking and the pretty leaves will add a dash of colour to your summer salads. The leaves and stems also have a purple tinge to them making it an all round attractive herb, I'm going to take a few cuttings before I plant this one out, it cost me more than I'm willing to pay for slug dinner, so I want to try and get some back ups. Now if someone can develop a slug resistent variety I'd be overjoyed!

Anybody going to Gardeners World this week may be interested to know that Sarah Clarke of Green Garden Herbs http://www.greengardenherbs.co.uk/ stocks this variety, although I'm not sure if she'll have it on her stand, but its worth ringing her to check?
