The pen-ultimate article in the Herbmonger series by Chris and Non was uploaded this weekend, and this month its about Brain 'Mead' a wonderfully tasty elixir that can help strengthen the brain and memory, keep the blood thin, blood pressure balanced, nerves strong and circulation prime.

In older times, this strong tonic would have been made with mead, a fermented honey drink. The recipe in the article can be turned into a tincture or a tonic wine. Read more about this wonderful drink in the article Brain 'Mead'

Chris & Non's recipe reminded me that I still haven't made up the Elixir of Life recipe from Ian Ball's book wine making book, its full of lovely herbs and honey, must get it done.

I have a funny story to tell about the brain mead. Back in the late 1990s, I was successful in applying for a course in Public Health Leadership. It was very scary since everyone else apart from a Health Authority Member was either a doctor or nurse or senior health service manager and I had no such professional background.

I'd not long joined the Herb Society so I thought it would be a nice idea if I made the Brain Mead and gave some to everyone at our first meeting. There were about 20 people in all, so I made 10 1/2pint bottles with garlic and 10 without and presented everyone with my gift to wish us all a good learning experience, together with the recipe, which I'd got permission from Chris Hedley to distribute. My companions thought I was a trifle strange, but accepted the bottles. They were all labelled with contents and doseage.

The next time we met, a senior health promotion manager came up to me enthusing about the wonderful effects of my herbal potion. He said, "I don't know if you were supposed to drink it all at once, but I did and I slept through the whole night - something I haven't done in years!"

At the time I was horrified he hadn't read the label and kept to the correct dosage, but now, I guess he did what he needed to do and given how stressed he was, it was obviously beneficial. He left his post soon afterwards and moved somewhere more congenial. Nice guy.
