At this time of year we're all busy buying or making gifts, some of them herbal in nature. Yet amongst the herbal bath bags, and edible herb gifts, how often do you consider stocking up on herbal goodies for yourself to help cure winter ills? Or even for making to give as gifts to others?

In our final edition of The Herbmonger Chris and Non show us how to make some herbal goodies of the medicinal kind Herbal Goodies For Your Christmas Stocking.

As it's Christmas I thought I'd give the Herb Society homepage a little bit of a festive flavour, we have a new logo as well. Keep an eye on the site throughout December for more seasonal articles.  Do let us know what you think and if you have any winter herb photos then send them to me and I'll add some to the site.

Chris & Non's Christmas Punch

December 2 2008, 8:31 PM

I recently acquired a copy of a small poster by Non Shaw and Chris Hedley that was put together for the Herb Society called "The Year In Herbs". It has recipes for herbal things to make from ointments to syrups with some lovely herbal drink recipes as well. The recipe for December is a lovely Christmas Punch so I thought I'd share it with everyone.

Christmas Punch

Take the peel of two lemons (reserve juice from both), one cinnamon stick, a few slices of fresh ginger root, a quarter of a teaspoon of fresh grated nutmeg, 8oz/225ml brandy, 8oz/225ml apple juice and 16oz/450ml water.

Heat to near boiling then add the juice of the lemons and 1pt/500ml elderflower wine.

I love the Herbmonger series - thank you so much, Debs, for restoring it to the internet.

The Herbal punch sounds wonderful I may try making it with some elderflower syrup and sparkling water as I kept some in the freezer this year.

I'm very tempted to try making the cyrstallised ginger too, but with a twist. I tasted some ginger which had been cooked in an elderberry cordial mix some time ago and it tasted heavenly, so I may try some elderberry crystallized ginger and see how that goes. Putting both sorts together would be very pretty as a Christmas gift.

I've been making the crystallised ginger and a spiced elderberry version over the past few days. The results are up on my blog http://kitchenherbwife.blogspot.com/2008/12/preparing-for-christmas.html
