Very sad news that Michael Moore, herbalist and so much more, died several days ago.He was a huge influence in the world of herbalism and it is due to his influence that many people have been able to use the knowledge that he shared to improve the health of others.

A very sad time. So many passing or near their time or suffering from life threatening conditions or traumas at the moment amongst the people I know.

This was posted both on Henriette's site and on the Herbwifery Index

Michael Roland Shaw Moore
January 9, 1941 - February 20, 2009
Husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, teacher, musician, herbalist.

So very beloved.

I hope to see you all at the celebration of his life this Spring.

From what I gather, Michael had been ill for some time. He had major kidney surgery either last year or the year before and then major spinal surgery at the end of last year from which he did not recover.

His herbal legacy and influence is really amazing. Hopefully many more will use his knowledge to learn all they can about the herbs we love.

One thing Henriette has instigated on her herblist this week in Michael's memory is "Appreciate a herbalist" week. An opportunity to tell someone how much you admire them and how they have influenced you. Too often we wait until the opportunity is no longer available to tell someone how much we appreciate having been touched by them.

For me it would be all the herbalists who give of their time and expertise so freely - Christopher Hedley in particular in the UK, Henriette Kress in Finland and the wealth of American Herbalists who take time and effort to bring herbs and their wisdom to the attention of anyone who cares to notice - particularly Kiva Rose, Jim MacDonald and Rebecca Hartman.

I was saddened to read this news, thanks for letting us know Linda, its always sad when a light goes out, strange how you can feel 'close' to people that you've never met, but that's the power of the internet. What a wonderful legacy Michael leaves behind though, he's given so much knowledge and inspiration to so many people, my thoughts go out to Donna and his family.

Lovely idea of Henriette's to have the Appreciate A Herbalist week, I only know 3 herbalists well and Jenny, Linda and Ann already know how much I appreciate them, at least I hope they do! As for herbalists I've never met but have inspired me I'd like to also cite Chris Hedley for his easy hands on practical herbal knowledge, Penelope Ody for the many books that help me understand things about herbs and inspire me to discover more and also Hilda Leyel, who although I'm unsure what her herbalist qualifications were, she was a successful practitioner and not only set up the Herb Society, but also kept herbalism alive so you and I can still benefit from it when the government of the day wanted to put a stop to it all. I'm certain there are many others I can add to the list, but then I'd want to wander into the inspirational people who were/are not herbalists but who have shown or taught me things about herbs that have enriched my life.

Sarah is a shining example of such a person, her enthusiasm, guidance and encouragement has changed my relationship with herbs over the past few years from being a person that just grow them and cooked with them to a person making kitchen her own remedies and exploring a wider field of herbs than she ever thought possible. So thank you Sarah, and thank you to all the wonderful people who make my life richer by imparting another nugget of herbal wisdom, passing on a tip or recipe and for sharing their knowledge with the world happy.gif
