Corns - help please?

Does anyone know of any effective remedy to relieve the pain of an entrenched corn? Or preferably to make it go altogether? Must be simple enough for an older person to administer themselves: don't mind if it's a repetitive treatment over a period of time so long as it works! Thanks tremendously for any help/advice or 'how to' suggestions.

The Romans, it is said, swore by the application of horse radish and Black Bryony, both of which I suspect, come within the "if you believe this, you'll believe anything" category. (OK class, what's the Latin for corns?) But give it a go and if it works, please let us know.
