....At least 50% of this teaching will be applied -, ie practical learning, set in a work related context. This is fine if you want to study, say, herbal medicine at the University of East London, but not so good if you have your sights set on Oxford and want to read a competitive subject such as history. Sunday Times 30 August 2008

Given how abysmally ignorant many history graduates appear to be these days, this seems an unfortunate comparison, suggesting that herbal practitioners are incapable both of grasping an academic subject and of learning the theory and reasons behind what they practise. Although this is an argument that would be familiar in twelfth century Paris or Salerno, it is interesting that it should re-surface in the mainstream press of the current century
Whether this opinion is in any way justified, I would not like to comment but I am sure that most medieval physicians not to mention the late great Zeylstra must be spinning in their graves

However without sufficiently tight regulation to convince the lay population that not all herbalists are totally barking with their planetary influences and funny water, this is the kind of comment that the profession is going to have to live with.

I am sure that someone is going to have a snappy answer to this one, but I'm off to the Lavender conference and so I won't be around to enjoy it.

Anthony
