I'm trying to find out what kind of plants might have been grown in an Edwardian herb garden, and how they might have been laid out. All ideas gratefully received!

Apart from the likes of Eleanour Sinclair Rohde, did the Edwardians have 'Herb Gardens' per se?

Edwardian herb gardens

September 7 2010, 12:36 AM

Hello,

I don't know if this titbit of information might be of some help. I have a book, 'The Herb Garden' by Frances A Bardwell, first published in 1911. The second edition was revised and published in 1930 while my copy (one of my many jumble sale finds) was a wartime edition published in 1942 by the Garden Book Club. It is written in a very 'chatty style' but quite an enjoyable read though probably not for the serious searcher after scientific herbal knowledge, more a curl up by the fire with some lightish reading. Does contain some sound advice on growing, cookery, and quite a few mentions of medicinal uses. In the back are charts of what to grow, where to grow it and what to use it for. The final paragraph remarks that herbs seem to have been neglected for many a long year and asks if there is to be a revival. Now where have I heard that before? Maybe you might be able to run down a copy through book search sites, I don't know, as I said mine was a fortuitous jumble sale find.

Jane
