I recently came across an article published in The Northern Echo newspaper on 12th February 2010 relating to the closure of Blacks Health Food Centre,Bishop Auckland.Apparently this was the last of a small chain of health food stores. The owners had decided to close as they could no longer compete with the cheaper imported products available in supermarkets or on the internet.A sign of the times.

The history of the company I found interesting. In 1935 Rebecca Birch opened "Birch's Herbal Stores" in Durham.Prior to opening the shop she practised from her home in Ferryhill,County Durham as had her father before her.On marriage her surname changed to Black.

The article concludes: writing in defence of her trade in a Sunday newspaper in 1936 Rebecca Birch explained the ethos of herbalism.

She wrote"I am sure herbalists will bear me out in this-we never have a "clean case".All our patients are off the scrap heap. They come to us when all hope is gone.If our treatment restores them to health they pass the good news on.There are thousands to day who thank herbal treatment for their restoration to health."

In many cases still true today.
