Campbell River Storm came to town Saturday ready to kick butt. Instead they got theirs handed to them by the gritty Sunwest Glacier Kings, who survived a genuine goon show to post a 7-0 win.
The win, coupled with a 3-0 loss Sunday in Parksville (see story below) keeps the Icemen on top of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League three-team round-robin semifinal playoff series to determine the North Island finalists.
The Glacier Kings wrap up their portion of the series this weekend with games Friday in Campbell River and at home Saturday against Parksville (7:30 p.m. Sports Centre #1). The series winds up Sunday with the Storm visiting the Generals; the team with the fewest points is eliminated.
Saturday’s game at the Sports Centre provided two firsts for the Glacier Kings; their first shutout over the Storm and first playoff win over C.R. The Storm apparently had no intention of playing hockey as they put on a disgraceful display — the team that prides itself on taking the ‘jungle’ out of Jr. B hockey made the ‘B’ stand for ‘barbarism’.
From running the goalie, to slashing and kicking and fighting, the Storm were full-value for the lopsided loss. They teams combined for 253 minutes in penalties in a game that took over three hours to play. Campbell River are five-time defending VIJHL champs, but if Saturday’s horror show is any indication of where their heads are at the league would do well to consider keeping them at home this year lest they bring embarrassment to themselves, the league, and the city they represent.
Full marks to the disciplined Glacier Kings, who came to play hockey and were rewarded with period leads of 1-0 and 3-0. As coach Dave Webb noted, the Yetis only finally responded to the Storm’s thuggery when pressed to the limit.
That came midway through the third period when John Hilhorst’s powerplay goal caused the Storm to abandon any pretense of playing the game. Andy Stricker added to C.R.’s frustration by kicking out 39 shots to extend his shutout streak against the Storm to 105 minutes.
The brutality left the Glacier Gang hurting for Sunday’s matinee in Parksville, with Mike Mayra suffering a concussion, Justin Enockson’s left arm a mess, Nathan Henderickson barely walking and Jordan Slater with a sore back and blood in his urine. They all played.

Here's another article from the Record regarding their off ice moves.
Coaches, player gone
Things are going smoothly for the Sunwest Glacier Kings on the ice. But not so away from the rink.
Head coach Dave Johnston is no longer with the team and forward Kris Armstrong has been released. Assistant coaches Dean Henderson and Mark Turnbull are also gone.
Owner-manager Dave Webb was behind the bench for Saturday’s home game against Campbell River and will guide the team through the rest of the playoffs with help from former Yeti coach Dale Hladun.
Glacier King management said Armstrong had “gone home by choice” while Johnston was on a leave of absence due to “personal reasons.” However, Johnston told the Record he was fired by team owners on Saturday afternoon.
Johnston and the team owners were scheduled to meet Tuesday. All parties offered a “no comment” when asked for details of what led to the shake-up.
