I HAVE BRED DOGS HERE AND THERE FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A PROBLEM THAT I CANNOT NIP IN THE BUTT MY DOGS KEPT GETTING HOOK WORMS. THE VET SAID THAT THERE IS NOTHING TO DO BUT JUST GIVE THEM WORMING MEDICINE. BUT I CAN NEVER TOTALY GET RID OF IT. NOW IM STARTING TO THINK IT MIGHT ACTUALLY BE WHIP WORM. IKEEP MY DOGS KENNELED WITH DIRT FLOORS. BUT I KEEP IT CLEANED UP. IT SEEMS THAT THERE WOULD BE SOMEWAY TO PREVENT THIS. I KNOW PEOPLE THAT HAVE SEVERAL DOGS AND NEVER HAVE ANY OF THIS. I CANT FIGURE OUT WHY I DO EVERYTHING IN MY POWER IT SEEMS AND CANNOT GET RID OF THIS AND KEEP IT GONE. THE MAIN THING IS THEY POOP CLOTTED LIKE BLOOD SOMETIMES WITH A HORRABLE SMELL. COULD THIS BE SOMETHING BESIDES HOOK WORMS. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN TREAT THE GROUND WITH THAT WILL KILL IT OFF BUT NOT HARM MY DOGS. PLEASE HELP

Put pee gravel on the floor, about 6in. or concrete. the hook worms are in the dirt/stool and can survive for sometime until picked back up on their paws. use the gravel, it drains great, and stays clean.

also, treat your dogs every 3 mon. w/ ivermectin .1cc per 10lbs and your vet will get mad at you cause he can't find any worms, lol.

treat your puppies every 2 weeks starting at 2 weeks to 12 weeks using fenbendazole. The key is to prevent the infestation rather than trying to kill them after they get them. We then treat our adult dogs on the first of each month with ivomec and on the 15th with fenbendazole.

ps we use "goat wormer" that is a 10% suspension liquid formula....

best of luck to you

The bloody stool with a fowl smell sounds more like coccidea sp? to me .I would change the spot were the puppies are whepled and raised I keep mine off the ground until they are 6 weeks old but I also make sure that the area where they are on the ground is free from disease.
I would take them to another vet.

I use a pump-up garden sprayer mixed 50/50 with water and bleach about once a month. I spray the entire dirt floors and about 4-5' up the fencing and every post. This helps kill the parasites that live in the ground, sterilizes the kennels, and eliminates odors.

The bloody stool sounds like coccidia to me. Ivomec is probably the best "all around" wormer with the exception that it doesn't kill tapeworms. I'm not 100% sure, but I think you'll need a seperate medicine for coccidia. Good luck!

the medicine for coccidia is called Corid there is a tablet that you have to give the infected dog and a liquid that you put in the other pups water as a preventative.
but you have to get it from your vet.

Albon

I have used Albon successfully to treat coccidia in kennels before.

Do not get it through your vet. It will be 5% and cost you big bucks. I buy the stuff online at VallyVet.com and get the 12.5% Albon for farm use.

Also, don't rule out Giardia for bloody foul stools. Could be either coccidia or giardia. Giardia can be killed with a 5 day treatment of Panacur (Fenbendazole).

You must sanitize your kennels before and after treatment or dogs will just keep getting it back.

Good Luck

I use the liquid albon you can get from the feed store. It is labeled for foul and livestock. It is clear and you dose it the same as the colored albon. Only difference is that it does not taste well. HEHEHE I work at a vet clinic and my boss told me about the liquid.

Brian,
I told you that wormer was a lifesaver...here's the real kicker...it's the only oral suspending medication that actually treats and kills tapeworms as well!

No real dogman does without owning a bottle of this cattle wormer!

Gravel

The gravel definitely works...it's great for somebody with just a few dogs or pens...but it gets very costly in a hurry with a large yard...same goes for concrete it eliminates any bacteria the ground retains...but it gets costly as well! The only other alternative for dirt is exactly what Daniel Jacks suggested...I use an old weed be gone bottle,I use the weed be gone on my yard and save the bottle, then I refill the bottle with bleach and it connects to the garden hose then treat the pens several times a year and every time you use a pen to whelp a litter of pups,be sure to spray everything, house, fence, food bowls, water bowls etc...I've used a bleach water formula for years with great results...I very seldom if ever loose a puppy due to sickness or disease associated with bacteria from the ground...a mixture of vinegar/water is great for flies and odor as well! There are a multitude of good tips that can be found here...just go back in the archives and check em out sometime...many have been covered numerous times! Thanks!

Gravel works great...I suggest the medium round gravel...only problem like Bates said ...everytime you scoop poop your gonna scoop some bits of gravel with it. It doesnt take long to scoop all your gravel out. Remember that whatever gravel you choose your dogs will be living on it. Dont use sharp edged or small pea gravel.

Tapeworms

James,

Just to let you know Fenbendazole is only effective against the Taenia species of tapeworm which RARELY infects dogs.

It is not effective against the common dog tapeworm Depylidium caninum. This is the tapeworm that is carried by fleas. You have to use praziquantel to eliminate the common dog tapeworm. This can be given alone or in a combo wormer such as Drontal Plus.
