with the colder months just around the corner and already here for some I thought Id put up a recipe of a food that we have used for years. You can add this to your existing dry food and just split the dry food in half. This will assure your dogs immune system is working properly and the direct fresh protein and mineral load will keep him in tip top shape to withstand cold temps. Try it a couple times a week or as often as you like. This is based partly on an article I read a number of years back somewhere written by Don Mayfield and is part of one of his famous keep diet regimens. I have altered it quite a bit but I originally got the idea from him. This will also help a dog that is sick and gone off feed. Your dogs coat will stay soft and shiney as well. The last 3 years I have been adding the barley life that Bates suggested. It helps with the digestive enzymes and its nutrient loaded.
2 pounds chicken (any parts)
1/2 box Total brand cereal
wheat germ oil 1 tbsp
flax seed oil 1 tbsp
3 boiled eggs
2 cups brown rice
lentils or green beans frozen half a small bag
1/2 box oatmeal
1/4 jar barley green or barley life
bring some water to boil in a large pot....add the chicken and boil until its cooked through. Then add the rice, beans, cook till they are done, then add oatmeal, wheat germ, flax seed. Mix the Barley Life up with a small amount of water and add it in at the end and stir it good. Cook it down and add the cereal at the end crunching it up and let cool. Be sure to debone chicken
check it out its easy to make and doesnt take long and well worth it for your dogs health.

ps my opinion of most all commercial dog food is that it's crap LOL But when your feeding a larger number of dogs its tough not to use it.

Ryan the vegetables in the mix help add antioxidents as well as vegetable proteins. There is no better source for these than the actual vegetable. The brown rice is one of the most digestible carbohydrate sources. Egg is a complete protein. It is one of the most digestible forms of protein and full of vitamins and minerals. Feel free to take this basic recipe and tailor it to your needs. It's a good idea to add whole food sources like carrots, spinach, celery, garlic, alfalfa leaf and apples because they too have lots of antioxidents. Most people dont think of dogs as eating plants I know. But they are an excellent source of protein and vitamins for us and dogs.
