... double it, multiply the result by your mother-in-law's birthday ... I reckon that it would be almost impossible to guestimate.
If you want to complicate the equation, factor in active members against total membership. My club (APMA) usually gets 20-30 at a meeting, but we have a lot more on the books (some of whom, to be fair, are from interstate or overseas), and I suspect that most other clubs would be similar.
According to our APMA treasuer, we have in 2009 68 paid members & 8 lifers
I think on the ACT newsletter, they say they have about 70-80..think IPMS NSW is about 80 ..dont know what the numbers are of other clubs, but numbers are all dependant on the size of the club... some people are members of multiple clubs..think about 15 members of APMA also belong to IPMS NSW, also we have a few overseas members either ex Aussies now living overseas or possibly even a few that only joined because of the magazine.
As for number of clubs scale model clubs - not gamers or remote controlled aircraft...bit hard to tell... some are just so quiet or low key you never hear of them. We had 1 person enter at Squadron last year & listed his club , someone said that they heard that he had heard the club folded years ago, someone else said that they thought its only a pub club now - eg meet at the pub, only 4 or 5 members , drink beer & chat no formal meeting, no evaluations, no trophys, just bring your latest model... only exists in name only. Also some traders have their own club..Gosford Hobbies for 1.
In NSW (incl ACT) there could be at least 10 maybe 15 clubs, same number could be in Victoria & Qld...dont know about NT or Tasmania (i recall Tasmania used to have a model show but never heard any of it anymore).. SA could be 3 or 4 perhaps & WA maybe another 4 or 5
regards
AJ
