Sydney artist Ben Quilty has won the prestigious Doug Moran National Portrait Prize with a painting of rocker Jimmy Barnes.

The painting, titled There But For The Grace Of God Go I No. 2, was chosen from 30 finalists.

The oil and aerosol on linen work is a portrayal of Barnes, who has acknowledged a battle with alcohol and drugs, "off his head".

The portrait prize is worth $150,000.

Photographer Dean Sewell won the $80,000 Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize for his work A Dry Agreement.

I remember someone on here saying they didn't like it...I have only seen it for the first time today, and on my first impression, I say it is great, fittingly for Barnesy, the painting looks LOUD to me...the painting screams at ya, screams from either the performing aspect or the pain and struggle aspect of Jims life..... demands attention...sound familiar?
