Cabaret Festival review: The Dad and Dave Show
BY ANNA SOLDING
One of the biggest draw cards of this festival, The Dad and Dave Show was almost an hour and a half of soulful singing with the festival director himself, David Campbell, alongside his father Jimmy Barnes and half-sister Mahalia Barnes.
All three are good at what they do but have quite different kinds of voices, from Mahalias full, strong vocals, to Jimmys strained chords and Davids smooth, more traditional cabaret style. They complement each other and take turns being the centre of attention.
Beautifully accompanied on piano, guitar, accordion, double bass and trombone, they sang hits such as Nina Simones My Baby Just Cares For Me and Ray Charless Halleluja, I Just Love You So.
Occasionally, Jimmy Barnes launches into a new version of one of his own songs, which also worked well. The show was very professional but at the same time light-hearted and intimate, with Dad telling the story of how he named his daughter after the great singer Mahalia Jackson, whom he first saw on television when he was no more than a boy himself.
One of the most powerful moments was Mahlia singing a brilliant, soulful version of Midnight Train to Georgia, backed by Dad and Dave.
The encore was a fabulous rendition of Love Me Tender, which started off with Mahalia singing very low, accompanied only by an amplified acoustic guitar, before Dad and Dave joined in to end the show on a real high.
