Well after a few days chilling in Sydney, Friday arrived and my first visit to the Enmore, which is located in an interesting part of Sydney called I think Newtown which gets a bit lively on a Friday night with its various bars, cafes, etc.
The Enmore is a beautiful theatre over 100 years old very similar to Hamersmith Odeon in the Uk.
This was a seated venue but for both nights the security were desperate to stop people getting up causing a few minor scuffles.
Friday night opened with Mahlia and her mates doing a good job with her soul thingy for the last time , although their was always the chance of a live birth on stage, which for a barnes would be quite fitting as she hit some high notes which could have induced the next generation.
A short interval and Maggie May faded into the Driving Wheels intro and Jimmy and the band hit the stage and took no time into a rip roaring first set.used to the truth added from Melbourne and a great version ofr Radio Songs, the crowd really getting into it now, security were desperately trying to keep everyone seated, breakfast at sweethearts kicked in to a huge singalong, the band were pumping by now,Jimmys voice stronger than ever and the crowd stood up on mass at which point head security man at front thought, fuck it iam off ,leaving the crowd to mosh away happily , the band finishing of the first set with Khe Sanh which always seems a bit special in Sydney.
The second set opened with some acoustic numbers helped by a harp ! Two hearts collide ,catch your shadow and flame trees the highlights, new songs from the forthcoming cd then rocked, Red Hot and Shake Rattle and Roll ( sweet little rock n roller would have fitted in nicely here, another night perhaps!) all the old faves then followed, Goodbye finishing of a rocking night in Sydney with Elly. Jackie, Davey , Mark, Robert,Ben on top form sending the masses home happy!
Saturday night again sold out with Mahlia opening again with another solid display, the hapless security again spoiling things not knowing how allocate a small mosh pit for a rock gig, although they probably would have had one for a Wiggles gig they were that clueless.
Another great show started with Driving Wheels, Money, a great version of Too Much Love with Mark playing some great guitar, Radio song again a surprising highlight, then we had the first guest of the evening,on electric guitar...Mossy! who took over with When the War is Over which the crowd just went off too, followed by Merry Go Round..
The second set again started with the acoustic/harp set , Still on your side and two hearts had the crowd singing happily, the crowd finally went off and stood up as Jimmy launched into Wheels in Motion , the final guest of the evening was David Cambell who joined Jimmy for Good Times , a great evening ended with Do or Die, Working Class Man and Davey and Jackie blazing away with Goodbye.
On reflection Friday probably rocked more than Saturday, Fridays show would have made a great live vid, but we had two fantastic shows with Jimmys Voice gracing the Enmore with style power and emotion!
For the fashion conscience girlies Jimmy wore the leather trousers and for the guys Elly wore a black number with a pink sash.
An interesting walk back through the streets of Newtown and to the city to watch England kick some Aussie butt in the Ashes.or not! !
