We haven't had any ducklings since before Xmas so it was a surprise when Mother Duck brought her 8 ducklings to our place this morning.

Family1.JPG

Anti-clockwise from Chook: Daisy, Donald, Donnie, 1brain2ducks, Marie and unnamed MD with 8 duckies.

Chook had just been sleeping with the other ducks and really does think she is a duck. She also runs over and breaks up any attempts at duck mating, squawking loudly and pecking at them until they break up! Maybe she flew here from over the river to escape the roosters? LOL

Nothing exciting happening over here (for a change) except I have been ivolved in organising the Aus/NZ Cardiac Conference this week that was held here in Nelson. Sorry I didn't ring Cindy, but I didn't realise I had to help out at the rehabilitation sessions at the conference today!

I hope everyone is OK and I will try to read all the posts to catch up!

Well there you are!

Just last evening we were commenting with disbelief that two years have passed since your US visit.  Glad to know you are OK and that the feathered friends haven't forgotten you either. How is Darryl faring?

Yay for ducklings!

It's so nice to hear from you Brook. Your little flock - including Chook - make me smile. They are such a cute bunch of birds. And 8 babies! Now there is a mama with her hands full! I just visted the campus duck pond today and saw a mallard with 3ducklings. The wild mallard here, Mildred, is setting on eggs and I do hope she makes it and we get to see the little ones. She and her husband, Marvin, are quite tame. Marvin spends alot of his time in our yard and comes walking up to within a foot of me when he sees me. They must be like the mallards you have there, friendly.

It sounds like you are busy at work - and did you add on to your caravan? It looks longer than I had thought. Anyway, thanks for checking in and I hope all is well.

Ha Ha, it's next door's caravan

Where the Likely Lads lived! Now we have a nice, quiet guy who keeps to himself. He is obviously a duck lover as I often see them crowding around his front step.

I am so lucky that all our ducks (and Chook) are doing well. Darryl is still up and down and the big shock came when a regular on the diabetes forum (where we have been getting lots of diabetes help) died in her sleep. She was only in her late twenties and had been so supportive to Darryl as she had similar problems with her blood sugars all over the place. That's not to say Darryl will die in his sleep - he has me to make sure of that!!!

I do wish we had no neighbours. A new couple shifted in and she seemed lovely. Then her husband returned from his job away fishing and he looks like an ex-bikie - mean and controlling. Now she smashes down our rock dam on the river, destroying the ducks pond. I didn't know it was her so I built it back up. This happened several times until I marched over and asked if she knew anything about the dam being destroyed repeatedly. She said "My husband gets woken by the ducks.....", "My husband doesn't like ducks....", "My husband...." (get the picture?). I asked her why she didn't come and talk to me, wouldn't it have been a nice thing to do? She replied "Well...no" So I said "FINE, no communication then!" and walked away with her yelling stuff at me. Darryl wished I hadn't made a scene but I needed to know why the ducks didn't have a pond anymore. We will leave the river as it is until they move on (hoepfully) and then we can build it again!

Sorry I have only been visiting intermittently. Real life has a habit of getting in the way. Cindy's idea of a weekly update sounds great!

Hi Brooke

May 17 2005, 9:18 AM

Was thinking yesterday that we'd not heard from you in a while. Beautiful birds!! It is so much fun watching a mama care for a bunch of little ones. We love to watch CWT a young emden gander care for every batch of muscovies that comes along. His present family of 4 are getting quite well feathered out. More will be hatching soon, so he will be busy.

Jan in the jungles of NE Texas. Home to geese (emdens and Canadas), ducks (calls, mallards, runners, Penkins, rouens, muscovies, ringed teal, Mandarins), emus, pheasants (silvers, red goldens, ringnecks, Amhersts, peafowl, doves (ringneck, white, diamond), button quail, 2 Great Pryenese guard dogs, parakeets, a cocatiel, turkeys (Rio Grande, royal palm, blue slate) and about a dozen or so breeds of chickens, both bantam and lg. fowl.

I'm sorry to hear about Darryl's friend

Such a sad thing. It's good though that there's a forum to provide support and info for you both as you figure things out.

What a shame about your jerk neighbors. I hope they move on soon!
