We went back to the vet today. After 5 weeks of Baytril, JoJo's fever has not gone down. He is molting very much right now so he looks like a tiny little thing - he normally looks like a big old pekin. He was up to 5 pounds 8 oz last Thur but back down to 5 pounds today. We finished his 2 weeks of wormer today - YAY! The vet gave me a different antibiotic to try - trimeth/sulfa. It is liquid so I will have to syringe it down his throat twice a day. Sigh. It is very inexpensive as I paid $4.50 for 10 days worth. JoJo acts like he feels pretty good - he's active and alert and I see him eat. I wonder if he'll ever be normal in temp and weight - and whether I really should just leave him alone. I sure am tired of this.

Anyone with experience with liquid medicines have any tips? I assume I will put the syringe way down the throat like I did the syringe for force feeding (which JoJo and I hated so I've not been doing). I think I'll go have a little frustration/exhaustion cry....

You read my m ind.

June 6 2005, 8:17 PM

was just going to post today acking for update on the hospital crew...

I just don't know what to tell you... i am sorry that JOJO is up and down in temp. i think all ducks and geese fluctuate but that since we do not watch it this closely that we just never notice it. But that is just my oppinion.

i know how exhausting it is with a sick animal of any type. My heart goes out to you and Robert.

Well i tryed to use a little syringe and give Crazy Leggs some soft food yesterday. i just squeezed it into his mouth slowly right back there before the lump on her toung. And she swallowed it. so I guess you could try that. Or do it like you were taught to do the feeding.

I my self would be inclined to leave a duck or goose on their own in a controlled situation and see how they do. Especially if they were eating and acting at least 1/2 way normal. I kind of peetered out on the Big time help since loosing Papa. I know he was sicker than we all knew. But i tend to watch and let Mother Nature / God / whom ever is watching over the critters of this earth, deal with what side of the bridge they want one on. I just go on gut and common sence...

Sometime it works and some times it does not. Every one has to deceide for them selves what and how they are going to deal with a sick animal.

I am sorry that i have not got the answer...I wish i did. would make my life easier. LOL

I find that if we just follow our heart and what it tells us we are actually listening to The Man Upstairs. It is our head that gets in the way most of the times.

Good luck and prayers for JOJO. It may be that he is just a protected duck for the rest of his life. I figured that if Crazy Leggs had lived that she would have to be protected and special care for life.

How are the other confined ducks? Or are they all well and out with their friends.

Big Hugs....

Sorry about the sick ones.

And I'm so sorry about Crazy Legs, Cindy.

ChickMom, most of the sick ducks we have just disappear and I never know what happened. If it was one of the big guys then I would be just like you - doing my best to help them. There is no right answer but it is frustrating to not see any improvement. A quick answer, one way or the other, would be better for both you and JoJo

You don't have to go way back in the throat.....

I have the best luck with just opening the bill enough to get the tip of the syringe in from the side....tip the bill to face upwards and squirt the liquid in.  Good luck ...it's difficult to stay with it but the results may just pay off.

Thanks for the nice sympathetic notes.

And, Toulouse, I will try your method. I hate putting the syringe down his throat as he just goes crazy when I do. I may end up wearing the antibiotic (it's pink and sticky and smells like candy) but it's worth a try.

Goldy still has a small scab so can't go in the pond until that becomes skin. He's been confined for 2 weeks and I can't wait for him to get out. Since JoJo's gang is in the big cage, Goldy has to be in a 5' x 3' cage and I hate that. I'm tempted to put him in with the other guys but am afraid he may injure JoJo some more. Goldy is very high strung and JoJo still moves a bit slow. I put the cages side by side so they can all chat. The others who are confined are Roz, JoJo's wife, who is just there to be with him, and Percy the new duck. Percy is doing well, is getting used to ducks.

I feel for ya

and that's why I learned how to give bird injections, as I was sooooo tired of giving Buddy that pink stuff. It IS a mess. I even put it in like Carol said.
I think it's so hard because you know they don't like it.

Best wishes to Jo Jo for a speedy and full recovery.....soon.
