Just Another Saturday Night.
By Kevin Duffy.
It was just another Saturday night, Mick, Steve and I were on patrol
when a
call came over the radio.
There was a disturbance at the Carve Inn on Denis Beach.
I said, “ That’s close, if Mick burns rubber, we’ll be there in a
minute.”
We pulled up in the drive where the manager Varner met us. She croaked
something out.
I replied, “Got a little husk Varner?”
She pulled herself together and told us an anonymous person has been
upsetting
the guests. I looked through the door, turned to Steve and said,
“Steve backus up, that’s a rough looking crowd.”
“Yes. Some real crazy critters!”
We strolled in. There was Varner’s husband Land holding a small box. I
asked
what’s in the box. He opened it and I looked in.
“That’s a Pooland. Where’d it come from?”
He replied, “It came in the Carve Inn post with no return address.”
“Ah yes. You get a lot of anonymous posts like that. Now what’s this
disturbance we’re here for?”
Land replied, “Some strange man assaulted some of our guests. He hit
Mr. Dower
on the shin with this stick.”
I checked it out, a piece of tough cypress, I looked at Mr. Dower and
asked, “Hows the shindower?”
He replied with a bit of philosophy, “Has Ross Hart? Is Jonser Red? How
much
can Holger Bear? And the ultimate question, how many hats?”
These words sthil echo in my mind.
Just then, backup arrived. It was Hair and Wayne. Land pointed out the
other
victim. A young woman.
I said, “Hair splitter away from the group and question her.”
He said to me, “Kevin Warner this might be rough.”
She looked at me and said, “Duffdownunder the pier.”
I saw him. We rushed down and found a set of footprints leading to an
upturned
boat. I told Wayne Lyon the sand and look under the boat.
“It’s to dark. We’ll have to turn the Boatright over.”
We all grabbed the side and heaved. But we couldn’t move it. There must
be an
Art in this I thought.
“Well Wayne can carver a hole in it, and Lin can too.”
Just then I heard Ed and Brenda Howell with laughter and I realised
they were
all just Jo King
