Hi everybody!
I'm carving a large redwood piece and was taught to seal it with linseed oil and mineral spirits. In the past, this method has shown to be a pain, darkening the wood and an inevitable need in the future to resand. I would like to use a varathain but don't know if I have to let the wood dry completly before I do it.
What should I do and recommend to the buyer?
Thanks,

I am carving an Ox at the moment from redwood. After finishing the carving I burn / scorch the wood, this dries out the imediate surface and makes sanding down clog free, well almost.Urathene varnish 3-4 coats gives pretty good protection but I use a tough exterior varnish called 'TUF' by Wood Care. You have to apply the coats of varnish after 2hrs and no longer than 12.Three coats gives a really durable protective coat.Graffiti and acid proof.
I hope this is of some use.
