13. Starting Over
ROXANNE: Not when he was there.
Luke opens the door to Meg.
MEG: Hi.
LUKE: Hey.
ROXANNE: (glances at Meg, then) Luke, don't you have somewhere to be?
LUKE: No.
ROXANNE: Meg and I need to talk.
MEG: It's okay.
ROXANNE: (to Meg) Are you sure?
MEG: Positive. I don't want to talk about Chris anyway. He's not coming back, and he's obviously not even thinking about me.
------------
HENDERSON: (friendly) What do you got for me?
INT. CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS - DAY (D1)
Jack hands paperwork to the city of council clerk, Raymond Henderson, black.
JACK: Hi, Raymond. I'm puttin' somebody up for that spot on the police commission.
Raymond looks at the papers, then at Jack.
HENDERSON: (pleasantly surprised) Reverend Davis.
JACK: Uh huh. He's got a lot of support.
HENDERSON: (leafs through the pages) How many signatures you have here?
JACK: Over five hundred. And a couple dozen letters of support from people in the community.
HENDERSON: (impressed) And here I thought we were just gonna rubber-stamp Harold Montgomery.
JACK: (smiles) Will you make sure everybody on the council gets a copy of this?
HENDERSON: Of course.
JACK: Thanks.
Jack turns to go.
HENDERSON: I hope he wins. Reverend Davis.
-------------------------
MEG: Everything's gonna be great.
INT. LUKE'S LOFT - DAY (D1)
Meg talks to Roxanne and Luke.
MEG: I'm gonna go to the prom with you guys --
LUKE: Cool. Two prom dates.
MEG: Then I'll get a summer job -- maybe at Bandstand, I'll talk to Colin about it -- and then in the fall I'll be in college.
-------------------------
PATTY: I'm just explaining why you have to let the hem down so much --
HELEN: That's enough. Go get changed. It's time for school.
Patty leaves in a huff. Helen and Shelly exchange glances.
SHELLY: If I had a sister that looked like Meg, and danced on Bandstand, I'd act even worse.
------------------------
LUKE: (trying to make conversation) It's hard to believe...
INT. EAST CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL - CLASSROOM - DAY (D2)
Luke and Roxanne stand before Father Cominos. He scrutinizes Luke, who's dressed in jeans and a tunic shirt.
LUKE: I just graduated a year ago.
FATHER COMINOS: (stares at his clothes) It certainly is. (then) Mr. Foley, what are your intentions regarding Miss Bojarski?
Luke and Roxanne exchange glances.
LUKE: My intentions?... I... intend to escort Miss Bojarski to the prom.
The Father stares at him as if he should say more.
LUKE: And... escort her home afterwards. Safely.
FATHER COMINOS: Fine. You may take Miss Bojarski. After shaving your beard.
ROXANNE: (outraged) What?
FATHER COMINOS: East Catholic policy. All boys must be clean-shaven.
LUKE: But I don't go to East Catholic.
FATHER COMINOS: It's your choice, Mr. Foley. If you wish to attend the prom, no beard. No facial hair, whatsoever.
On Luke and Roxanne.
------------------------------
SHELLY: Nothing.
INT. PRYOR HOME - SEWING ROOM - DAY (D2)
Shelly talks to Helen over coffee.
SHELLY: He wouldn't say anything about where he is, when he's coming home.
HELEN: I'm sure he's fine. Chris can take care of himself.
SHELLY: Sometimes I think that's the problem. He thinks he can do everything by himself.
HELEN: You would know if something was wrong. He called you, that means he --
SHELLY: He's not a completely lost cause?
HELEN: No. That he's thinking about you, and that if he needed something, he'd come to you.
--------------------------------
INT. CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS - NIGHT (N3)
Before the meeting. Jack talks with Acker and another councilman, Phelps. Councilmen are arriving, taking their seats. The public audience is filling out, mostly with black constituents and a few cops.
JACK: The thing to do is increase the police presence in those neighborhoods.
PHELPS: I've been trying to do that for years.
ACKER: (to Jack) That's never gonna happen.
Jack gives Acker a look, moves of towards his seat. Acker and Phelps continue to talk.
HENRY: Jack.
Jack turns to see Henry and Sam approaching, excited for the vote.
SAM: Hello, Mr. Pryor.
JACK: Henry. Sam. Didn't expect you to be here.
HENRY: You couldn't keep me away.
On Jack, tense.
------------------
MEG: There's something I want you to know.
INT. EAST CATHOLIC - GYM - REFRESHMENT TABLE - NIGHT (N3)
JJ gets punch for Meg.
JJ: What's that?
------------------
HENDERSON: Councilman Pryor.
A long beat. Jack looks at Henry and Sam.
HENDERSON: Councilman Pryor?
JACK: (into mic) Davis.
Acker can't believe it. He's pissed.
HENDERSON: Councilman Zimmer.
ZIMMER: (into mic) Davis.
Jack smiles. The black people in the audience jump up, cheer and applaud.
HENRY: We got it!
Henry hugs Sam.
HENDERSON: Ladies and gentlemen, please keep your seats and keep quiet... Final tally: Montgomery, eight votes. Davis, nine.
Jack glances at Acker. Acker stares back at him, stone-faced.
---------------------------
COACH AMBROSE: You settlin' in?
INT. EAST CATHOLIC - GYM - DANCE FLOOR - NIGHT (N3)
JJ talks to Coach Ambrose at the edge of the dance floor. They watch the kids dance.
JJ: Yeah. Been workin' over at the recruitment center. And Beth and I got married. Had a son.
COACH AMBROSE: Congratulations. You've been busy.
JJ: Not busy enough. Lookin' for another job.
COACH AMBROSE: You'll find something. You see the old teammates, Danny, Tommy?
JJ: Sure. We don't hang out like we used to, but, uh... we were all sad to hear about Patrick.
The band stops playing. On the stage, Betsy approaches the microphone.
COACH AMBROSE: He was a good kid. Real good kid.
BETSY: If I could have your attention, please, I'm going to announce the awards.
Meg, Roxanne and Luke watch Betsy.
BETSY: (into the mic) All winners should report to the stage immediately to have your pictures taken... (reads from a list) Best Legs: Roxanne Bojarski and Sean Meggers...
Applause and cheers from the crowd.
MEG: Roxanne!
ROXANNE: Of course.
Roxanne sashays off toward the stage.
BETSY: Most Devastating Smile: Christina Black and Rocco Hill.
More hoots and applause.
LUKE: Are they going to give awards for every body part?
MEG: (nods) Male and Female.
JJ and Coach Ambrose. The coach starts to leave.
COACH AMBROSE: I better get back to chaperoning. When the music stops, couples tend to wander off. Keep in touch, JJ.
JJ: I will.
COACH AMBROSE: (turns back) You know, if you really want another job, maybe we can work something out. Something with the team.
JJ: That'd be great... Kind of a volunteer thing?
COACH AMBROSE: No, we'd pay you. Why don't you come by my office next week and we'll talk.
-------------------------------
SAM: I'll wait with you till Luke and Roxanne get here. I don't want you to be alone.
MEG: Thanks. Are you sure you won't come to the party?
SAM: (gentle) I think one prom was enough for me.
MEG: I know what you mean.
EXT. PHILLY STREET - NIGHT (N3)
JJ's been pulled over. A cop approaches his window.
COP: You're JJ Pryor, aren't you?
JJ: Yeah.
COP: Jack Pryor's son.
JJ: Yeah -- is there a problem officer?
COP: No, no problem. Nice car.
JJ: Thanks. Uh, you know my uncle's on the force.
COP: I know who your Uncle Pete is. He's a real screw-up, just like your father.
JJ: 'Scuse me?
COP: You heard me.
JJ: Did you pull me over for a reason, officer?
COP: Yeah, you got a busted headlight.
JJ: No, I don't.
The cop takes out a baseball bat and smashes his light. JJ jumps out of the car.
JJ: Hey, what're you doin'?
INT. VINYL CROCODILE - NIGHT (N3)
Meg and Sam listen to the song coming from the speakers.
MEG: (excited) "Shop Around." This is the first record we traded, remember?
SAM: I used to love this song. Listened to it over and over --
MEG: Me too. (then) I remember when I bought it, though, Luke said I should listen to some "real artists."
Sam laughs.
MEG: That should've been my first clue that we weren't going to last.
SAM: It's hard to tell how things are gonna turn out from the beginning.
-----------------------------
EXT. PHILLY STREET - NIGHT (N3)
The cop smashes JJ's other headlight. JJ goes to grab his bat.
COP: This is a message for your father.
The cop punches JJ. JJ fights back as Cop 2 jumps in.
COP: You tell your father he better do what he's told.
Cop 2 holds JJ back as the first cop punches him.
INT. VINYL CROCODILE - NIGHT (N3)
Meg and Sam. They're standing a little closer now.
MEG: You know what I just realized? With everything that happened tonight, I never even got to dance at the prom.
SAM: I'm sorry.
Meg and Sam look at each other, and he takes her hand. We think he's gonna ask her to dance. But then he leans in, and kisses her on the cheek. As Meg starts to kiss him back, on the lips.
EXT. PHILLY STREET - NIGHT (N3)
JJ leans against his car, panting, face bleeding.
INT. VINYL CROCODILE - NIGHT (N3)
Meg and Sam pull apart, stunned by what they just did. The psychedelic mural looms behind them, in all its swirling craziness. Before they can move or speak, the door bangs open and a crowd of teenagers rush in, flooding around them.

The poster probably found this over at the fanbolt forums. The thread is called American Dreams Spoilers and Speculation. The poster Azuline types up "sides" which I believe are sections of dialogue, not entire scripts, for upcoming episodes. Sometimes they are out of context and/or differ from what actually ends up on the show.
For example, there was dialogue for the scene where JJ meets Johnny, and the scene in the last episode where JJ explains why he wants to get married at St. Catherine's was supposed to be longer according to the sides. Also, there was supposed to be a scene where Meg talks with a priest about premarital sex before sleeping with Chris. This was probably cut for time, but it might have helped viewers who thought, myself included, that her decision was a hasty one.
Since we're supposed to credit the poster from Fanbolt, here is the link to the thread: http://www.fanbolt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18466&page=1&pp=15&highlight=American+Dreams. |
