well, he needs drugs for this whole manipulating process, i think. even the embryos of the lower castes get alcohol into their blood surrogate, so that they're easier to condition, the brain doesn't defend against the hypnopaedia so much. like when you're drunk or something like this, you are much easier to influence as usual. i'd say they're made kind of stupid by this, exactly in this way which is most comfortable for the state. and the drugs are used later on. while the people are taking soma steadily, they suppress their brains` ability of thinking. but though the brain-functions can be calmed down by soma, the emotions can't ( like lenina tries to forget her feelings for john with the help of soma, it doesn't work )
by the way, i don't think the gossips about bernards alcohol-in-blood-surrogate-stories are true.
because: this alcohol-thing makes the hypnopaediac process work better. and bernard is not what a perfectly conditioned alpha-plus should be like.
(he's strange, prefers being alone, likes nature, doesn't like soma and so on...) |
