We´re interested in some historical aspects, how the transition from ''our'' world to the world described in this book was managed.

fertilizing process..

...is our favourite Theme of Brve New World.
It's incredible how humans can be manipulated and controlled.
However, the author had great and interesting imaginations of an artificial, produced humanity without individuality and own opinions and ideas.

I think it will be interesting how the author comes to the point that the future will be like in "Brave New World"! What did he think about it and why did he write the book like this?
I think it's something special that his opinion about the future from 1932 was the right one!

hypnopaedic

November 1 2002, 3:43 PM

For me the hypnopaedic lessons are very interessting, so I would like to talk about it.
How was it explored?
How is it used in nowadays?
Is it good or too manipulating?
are some questions that sound quiet interessting to me and that I would like to discuss!!

I agree with Steffi...

I would also like to talk about the fact that Aldous Huxley wrote "BNW" in 1932,--- and today most parts of the book could be reality!!! That is unbelievable.
We cannot think about how the year 2072 will look like.
How did he get the ideas of the far future.

I'm interested in the topic "soma"...
Why do the people need it- what happens if they do not use it...
Are those drugs important for the "perfect world"?

Soma (for Leonie)

November 4 2002, 10:09 AM

we like the topic of "soma", because for us in this book the drugs have an important role. The characters behaviour is influenced by soma. Without soma the characters can feel:sadness,nervousism..etc and for this reason it can't be a perfect world,in a perfect world all people must be happy, without any problems.Huxley describes a false world because it isn't true that the drugs give happiness...(rethoric sentence....but true)

Soma

November 5 2002, 3:08 PM

That's really true, but then we should think about if this "perfect world" really is perfect...
Should'nt the people be happy without those drugs?A Perfect world must work without the "help" of soma!!

Hypnopaedia...

November 4 2002, 3:14 PM

Very interesting! Pupils could probably learn while they're sleeping, what a wonderful idea. But maybe our sleep would not be the same then. maybe we would be exhausted when we're getting up instead of being really awake. It might be easier and more comfortable to learn during our sleeping phases, -but will that really train our brains? Will it really make us more intelligent? I suppose there are a lot of padagogical aspekts, the difference between conscious and unconscious learning.
The world of Brave New World does not exist of usual rules of nature anymore. Everything is manipulated, manipulated for stabillity, for convenience.
That's the result of the longing for a better world, an easier and a faster world.
And that's our intention, too isn't it!?

Hypnopaedia

November 6 2002, 9:02 AM

One of the topics I like in the book is hypnopaedia.I think that is a great process for conditioning people. In fact when they are younger starts their moral teaching and so they memorized it for all their life.I like all the particular process for conditioning people and the great power of this process, but I think that using them there is the death of the individuality of a peson. So I can say that in the scientific point of view hypnopaedia is a great process but at the uman one?

Who's Mustapha Mond ?

November 7 2002, 8:48 AM

Who's Mustapha Mond ?

I'm very interested in Mustapha Mond.
In particular his personality is very strange in the sense that he seems contradictory.
When he speaks, in the chapters XVI-XVII , with Bernard and John, he reveals himself very different from his description in the first chapters.
In the beginning he seems a typical individual of this utopic society ( his mind is apparently controlled), but after many chapters he shows himself very very different !!!
In fact he says that, when he was young he liked science, religion, history….
He knows Othello and he was a good physical , too much good for this society!
But after Ford (A.F.) the unique important thing is the mass production.
" Universal happiness. keeps the wheels steadily turning; truth and beauty can't " . he says to john.
“What's the point of truth or beauty when anthrax bombs popping all around you ? ( description of past world ) this type of society hasn't been very good for truth of course, but it's been necessary for happiness !!!!”
For me in this story Mustapha Mond represents the passage from past world to utopic society . He is very similar to some protagonists of the story of the 900, or not ?

Soma

November 12 2002, 9:27 AM

What kind of substance is soma?! Is there maybe a link to reality?!
Why does Huxley "needs" a drug in his book? What is his intention?!

Re: Soma

November 12 2002, 5:42 PM

well, he needs drugs for this whole manipulating process, i think. even the embryos of the lower castes get alcohol into their blood surrogate, so that they're easier to condition, the brain doesn't defend against the hypnopaedia so much. like when you're drunk or something like this, you are much easier to influence as usual. i'd say they're made kind of stupid by this, exactly in this way which is most comfortable for the state. and the drugs are used later on. while the people are taking soma steadily, they suppress their brains` ability of thinking. but though the brain-functions can be calmed down by soma, the emotions can't ( like lenina tries to forget her feelings for john with the help of soma, it doesn't work )

by the way, i don't think the gossips about bernards alcohol-in-blood-surrogate-stories are true.
because: this alcohol-thing makes the hypnopaediac process work better. and bernard is not what a perfectly conditioned alpha-plus should be like.
(he's strange, prefers being alone, likes nature, doesn't like soma and so on...)
