John bribes a customs official in an effort to destroy the Kiriakis empire this week, which infuriates Marlena.
"This is all a game to John," explains Drake Hogestyn [John]. "He was bored and needed a distraction. He picked up a dossier, read it, and realized Stefano was spending more money than he made. Stefano didn't care what Kiriakis was doing, but John does. John knows that [taking over the docks] is the fastest way to build the DiMera empire back up."
Meanwhile, Marlena, determined to prevent a Kiriakis/DiMera war, warns Philip of John's plan. "John comes upon Philip and Marlena on the docks talking and is pretty surprised," notes Hogestyn. "He's says, 'You're supposed to be my wife. Don't tell me you're tipping off trade secrets to the competitor?'
Philip proposes the two families abide by their old agreement, but John refuses. "That agreement was with Stefano," points out Hogestyn. "John doesn't want both families to profit. The way John operates, there's a winner and a loser." Marlena is summoned to the hospital for Bo's impending surgery. When John shows up later, she asks if he's changed his mind about bribing the customs guy [played by Melrose Place's Linden Ashby]. "John has already figured Marlena out," scoffs Hogestyn. "She went to Philip to tell him what was going on. John processed that and filed it away. He'll never be honest and tell her exactly what he's doing. He's going to lie and tell her what ever she wants to hear."
Marlena and John leave for a walk on the docks. When John gets a call from the customs official, he tells Marlena that "It's Stefano's lawyers. There are more papers to go over regarding his brother's estate. John doesn't feel he needs to include Marlena in this."
Later, John finalizes the deal to hold up the Kiriakis shipments while Victor embarks on his first therapy session with Marlena. As fate would have it, Victor gets a call from Philip reporting the trouble while they're together, so Marlena realizes John did bribe the guy, after all.
"Philip shows up at the mansion all blown apart, because his ships have been detained," warns Hogestyn. "Then, Marlena charges in, yammering like a hen-pecking wife. 'Did you do this? Did you do that?' John feigns shock. Marlena knows he's lying. She tells John she is disappointed in him and storms out." After word, John picks up the gloves Marlena left behind "and something comes over him for a second," hints Hogestyn. "It's deja-vu, it's gone."
But not forgotten, because John will try to make amends next week.
