I spent the week in Dallas at a TV conference. I work for an NBC station. On my way home last night I saw one walking on the side of the road.
So here's how I found out. I got home a little after 2am last night and proceeded to goto bed with my wife. As we layed there shooting the sh1t roadkill came up as a joke. My wife and I are always joking around so this is pretty normal talk. LOL So I told her how I almost hit a opossum and an armidilla on the way home. We laughed about it then I told her about IT. Thing is I did not know what it was. I just described it to her and she joked it was a chucaba or how every you spell it. So here's the story.
I'm on my way home from Dallas headed to Beaumont. I took I45 to Huntville and then cut across 190 to Woodville. Between Livingston and Woodville, about 12:30-1am I came up on a straight stretch of road about a mile or so long that ended in a curve. As I neared the curve I noticed something walking toward my car on the right side of the road. Now since I had dodged two other animals earlier I really watched it close because I did not want it to run out into the road in front of me. At first glance I thought it was a bobcat or a mountain lion... it had a small head and features that seemed like a cat almost. It's eyes did not glow in my lights though. Then I realized it was too tall and it's legs were too long to be a cat of some kind. It probably was about waist high. So I thought maybe a dog. However that was wrong because it moves real graceful like a deer and it's front legs where long and spindley like a deer. It wasn't scared of the car and slowly started walking up an slop away from the road. That is when I noticed it had almost no neck, a mane, short tail or a tail that tucked up under it's backside, and it's back legs looked more like a rabbit! Real strong thigh and the bottom part of the leg was spindley but not like the front legs... They were shorter. It also had a strange backbone line. It was low in the back but as it worked it's way to his head it became kind of huntched. Strangest thing I have ever seen. It moved so smoothly too. It was gray by the way. I went through every kind of animal I could think of in my head as I neared it and pasted it but nothing made sense. Then I passed it. I almost turned around to get another look but I was so tired from the long drive I decided to keep going. Now I wish I had turned around and snapped a picture of it on my cell phone. It almost looked like a hyena but not. If I had to guess it was a mix of MANY mammals. Now I'm not one to believe such things but this thing was REAL and I instantly thought it was strange. I told my wife about it as a joke and if she had not started joking about roadkill i probably would have forgotten about it. It was then we looked it up online and realized what it was!!! Now there are two kinds I have read about. One is the lizard kind and the other is more of a mammal kind similiar to a dog or something. Mine was not a lizard... but it was REAL. No doubt. Definitely NOT any kind of animal I have ever seen before.
Any ideas?
