muahaha, katana.

by Sonic

Katana should be ready for testing sometime next week. Its looking very nice, very nice indeed. Oh yeah, if anyone knows of a 2k3 weapon mutator where you can teleport around with the shock rifle(ie shoot a beam and teleport to where it hits) I'd be much appreciated if you can link me. Right now, the katana teleport tends to drop you out of the world on occasion(stupid static meshes used as level geometry -_-). If not, then I've got a fix I'll try to see what happens.

Yes, the Death Disc

by

I have a all new design for the Death Disc, which is more like that flying blade from the movie Krull. But I think we'll be doing the Bow and Arrows next, just after the Dollbomb and Katana are truely done. We are refining every aspect of U4E, this time around. No rushing models out prematurely, everything needs to look the best it can.

(Accept the hands, I just can't make a prefect hand...)

The hands...

by

I know it may be hard to do, but if you're going to be adding the models in... you may want to think about adding the hands of the other characters to the weapons, for when they weld them... if that's possible. Either that, or you could leave the hands out entirely... most games don't really show the hands. Just a thought.

Beta Testing?

by

Sonic thinks it's time for a little closed beta testing, so here's a nice Umod package of what we have thus far. I can't really test it on my system, since I have many alpha files of U4E still in the works, but if you guys could check it out and provide some feedback, that would be cool.

http://www.finaldawn.com/mods/Unreal4Ever%20Tournament%202003%20Beta.rar

I think this only contains the new BubbleGun. Primary fire should be farmillar, although it only inflates people's heads. Due to constraints in UT2k, it seemed like the best way to go. The Alt-Fire is a simple trap, probly best used in CTF, or just to piss off your friends and enemies. Fire it and laugh at their plight.

Please test this online, and in anyway you can. Leave your feedback here. Look for bugs and leave suggestions. Thanks!

I can almost guarantee that it won't work online because I didn't do any code that way. I planned on doing 3-4 weapons then debugging them all at once for online play. If it does work online I'll be incredibly suprised.

doodee dooo

by QuazBotch

When peoples heads get really big, the heads turn upside down.

You might want to shrink the maxiumum head size, because it looks really stupid with that much head clipping through walls/stairs.

Bubbles look good, but the sounds are a bit on the cute side. Save cute stuff for the doll bomb :p

The gun looks like overkill for a bubble blower, changing the sounds might help. If it were up to me and I had actual sound making skill, I'd have a fan whhrrring away inside the gun all the time. When it fires, have a click as some door thingy inside the gun opens, unleashing pre-blownup bubble doom. Door closes, and rush of air as another bubble is blown inside the chamber and held until next firing.

Balance wise, it seems to take a lot of bubbles to pop someone, I'd suggest lowering that number.

Will any weapon be able to break through the big holding bubble from the inside?

yep

by Sonic

Heads used to need 500% size to kill, now its at 300%. This makes for fewer bubbles needed to kill and heads dont get as big.

Yes, the alt fire of the bubble gun can pop you out of a bubble.

Inverted Heads, we know...

by

We know about the inverted heads. That's not on purpose, it's just a bug in the Inflate/Deflate routine. Sonic could tell you more.

I love the sound effects, they give the gun ALOT of Personality. I hate boring stuff. :p I'm sorry, but the Dollbomb will skip, and the bubbles will pop. I say, the more wacky and weird, the better! (Also, they sound damn slick!)

I would also agree that the bubble gun should do more damage. Maybe %50 to %100 more?

Anything else? Does the weapon work in LAN games???

the inverted head bug

by Seymour Gibbs

As far as I can see, the head shrinks back to normal again after the barrage has stopped, yes?

The problem is that the head keeps shrinking past that point to noting, and then re-enlarges upside down, as if the "minimum head size" is a negative value of "maximum head size"(?) Then you have to shrink this head and re-inflate it the right way up to score a kill.

However, I know nothing about coding so could easily have this completely wrong.

The model I have to say is really great - It has the old U4E style with all the added detail and curves and shiny bits to make it fit with UT2k3. Quite why a gun that fires bubbles needs such a huge (yet stylish) cooling jacket is anyones guess, but it looks great all the same - particularly the 'detergent bottle' ammo cannister on the back.

It's not Soap Bubbles, you see...

by

Let me endulge in my creative lience, but it's not a Soap Bubble gun, it's a "Super-Reactive Bio-Chemical Gas Sphere Launcher". It fires off an unstable gas that effects organic tissue. The gas is trapped inside of the thin Bubble shell, which is actually a super-dense polystyrine carbon tubuiral mesh. Using Buckyballs in this elastic material's atomic structure, the sphere has amazing strength and yet is increably light. This allows the bubbles to also be shot at a high speed, only breaking on their target, and releasing the quickly desolving gas into the victem's body and/or circetry. (If your victem is a robot)

The Alt-Fire is more like a large glob of just the Polymer shell, or basically the plastic bubble. The gas is reducing to a more stable structure. The gas has almost anti-gravity properties when activated on impact, causing the victem to float skyward inside a bubble of this gas.

(BTW, you CAN pop the bubble, by using the same weapon that made it. Just Alt-Fire another bubble, and the two will overwhlem their internal resistance and explode.)

So the weapon fires hot plastic bubbles full of "Funny-Gas" that does nasty things, understand? It does NOT shoot soap bubbles. Please pass that on!

(but use a spell checker first)

The ammo says so!

If it's not soap bubbles, you might want to change the pickup messages, or else people will keep calling them soap bubbles no matter how many times you correct them :P

Awsome, and a suggestion or two

by

I love it. It has that unique U4E feel thatI so enjoy, which is part chaos (which I also enjoy). If this is any indication of where U4E is going on UT2K3, then I have high hopes that it will equal, if not surpass (given time), the UT1 version.

Now I have a suggestion, prehaps allow the primary bubbles to be able to push the bubble-entrapped victim, pushing them say, over a steep area or death chasm to damage/kill them. I also though of allowing the primary bubbles to prolongue the life of the trap bullble, but after reading what Max said, I don't think that would be very logical, unless he finds a way to fit it in, according to his will.

I'd be ready to lend a hand, but not right now (full time anyway). I'm on my pet project right now, and looking for work. When either one will be in satisfactory state, I'll be ready to dedicate more time for you guys in sound/weapons/voicepacks/whatnot. I still have the sounds for U4ET I submitted so if you want them or some new/modified sounds contact me with no worries. I could also give you some of my stuff if interested.

Again, great job on the bubble gun. Love the bubbles. Keep it up!

I would like to push a bubble....

by

We were orginally planning to allow players to push around their victem's bubbles, but it didn't work out. Sonic knows the speifics, but the bubbles never seemed to go where they were suppose to, and often they just left the level all together. (Which is funny, but a bad)

As for sound effects, I would certainly love some help. I've been doing my own lately, just to fill in the gaps. The BubbleGun sounded good, but we'll have to wait and see if the Katana sounds work out quite as well. My sister will hopefully do the sound effects for the Dollbomb again. Beyound that, there's MANY more weapons and even some characters, in our future. Plenty of opertunaties to lend a hand, if you feel so inclined.

Right now, the biggest help we need is with Texture maps and character models. We need some Pro-Quality guy, or two, to take over part of this large load. And I'm certain Sonic would love some programming help. There's so much to do, plenty of work to go around. And did I mention the MSU contest? I think we might actually have a shot, assuming something terrible doesn't happen. Anybody with the talent and the time to join us, could make ALOT of money and respect.

Bubbles!

by Mortimer

The bubble gun's a little hard to aim and tell when it hits the opponent. Making the bubbles spawn a bit lower in the shooter's view would help a little, giving a better viewing angle on the bubbles' flight path.

It'd be a cool easter egg to make people who get hit with the bubble gun actually become lighter. You could decrease the effect of gravity upon the victim, or increase their jumpz.

That might mess up the game... Sonic?

by

I'm not the best person to answer this, since I don't code stuff, but from what I've been able to tell, everytime to start to move outside of what UT2k is normally used for, we experiance problems. Of course, most of what U4E does is outside of what the Unreal engine was ment to be used for, so that doesn't mean we don't try.

I dunno, maybe we can get Sonic's opion. Sonic: Do you think we could reduce character's weight according to the size of their head? (The old floating Ballon head trick from Warner Bro's cartoons) Or will that definently mess up the game?

UT2k3 doesnt support friction and gravity variables on a per-pawn basis at the moment. You have to use map zones. Which sucks.

Fun with bubbles...

by

I think I know what the problem is with the upside down heads. It's not that they are upside down, so much as they are inside out. They shrink down so much that they actually start to grow inside out which looks like it's upside down. I think you need to tell it when it should stop shrinking, and that should fix it.

I also noticed when fooling around with the bot, that after raising her up near the ceiling, which was close to a lower section of the ceiling, a part of the bubble went through the wall, but you probably can't fix that without making it harder to trap people in a bubble in the first place.

I also think that the bot managed to shoot a few primary fire bubbles through the bubble trap, but it only happened once (when I was nearly underneath her), and I couldn't reproduce the results.

Anyways, keep up the good work. I would be more than happy to help if only I had any kind of skill. :P
