A commentary on demonizing people.

Everyone thinks this is a horror pictue--and it is. But it is much more, I think. It is a commentary on the fact that "good" people (religious or not) find themselve compelled to demonize others based on a real or imaged FRAILTY that they see in the other. Once you can demonize the other ("the evil doers") then it is alright to "destroy the demon."

"Good" people do it all the time. I do it. You do it, probably. It is so subtle that it makes invisible just as the father says and just as the surveilance camera was unable to catch Fenton at the FBI office.

"Good" people are nice fathers of children. They are law enforcement people. They are Presidents of the United States. And, yes, they can even be Popes.

"Good" people pass this demonizing ability on to their children. Not only does the father pass it on to his son Adam, but we see in the end of the movie that Adam's wife is pregnant--a hint that it will be passed on to the next generation.

The real horror of this story is the fact that "good" people can demonize others and then it is alright to destroy the ones they have demonized. And, nobody seems to notice that it is happening. Nobody notices, that is, until you are the one who gets demonized because of some FRAILTY of your own.
