Famous People In Comics

The 3000th edition of The Beano was chock full of celebrities. Readers were asked which famous person was their favourite Beano character akin to. So Dennis The Menace was like Chris Evans, Minnie The Minx was like Geri Halliwell (oddly six feet tall), Plug was like Ronan Keating and so forth. Even the special edition celebrating Dennis The Menace's 50th birthday concluded with a bash featuring Lenny Henry, Dawn French (as the Vicar of Dibley), Ali G and Billy Connolly amongst others. Now these drawings differed from early portrayal of celebs in The Beano. When Sally from 'Tom, Dick and Sally' would do the 'One Step Beyond' march with Madness or Dennis and Gnasher dance with The Krankies to 'The Krankies Go To Hollywood' the famous people were obviously traced from photographs. It created an odd effect where the imaginary characters appeared three dimensional and the very real famous people were oddly flat. Any memories of well known faces appearing as gueststars in comics and how they were drawn?

Incidentally Calamity James was like Mr. Bean.
