      Building units can be added or removed according to need, and there is always a mainframe which provides the necessary infrastructure for these add/drop units. Hence the 'lego' like little rooms and a 'frame' like structure where they are all attached into. This is all in theory. In practice, they built them so they embody these ideals.

      Most 'ugly'? I don't think so. But ugly as a metabolist building, perhaps. I have seen better.
