March 4th was the 12 month anniversary of my ownership of MB's new Gullwing. During that time I experienced 22,600 miles of pure driving joy after 1K break-in miles plus two rocks in window and parking lot accident that allowed me to replace my front bumper at no cost--a good deal because I had a few bottom scrapes due to low clearance.
As fortune would have it, the numbers made sense for me to trade-in the 2011 version for a new, i.e., 37 miles, 2012 that was on dealer's showroom 10 days ago. Big difference in delivery time for the two autos; first Gullwing delivery was 10 months after US introduction versus 1 day for second.
My desires for 2012 were not pressing because only upgrades that I wanted were blind-side assist and adaptive suspension. I really loved my black ext with peanut brown int plus aluminum trim, but I must admit the black on black with carbon fiber trim is awesome and possibly better looking. My pics don't do it justice. I would have never included CF under the hood nor the B&O sound system upgrade in my ordering specs, but now that I have them they are appreciated.
It appears that MB has fixed the throttle hesitation issues that plagued the 2011 edition that was somewhat solved with a transmission software upgrade.
90% done with break-in miles and the Escort 9500ci radar/laser detector was installed yesterday so looking forward to a 400+ mile jaunt "at speed" to visit my mom this Thursday.
I hope to file a full report of the second-1st impressions whenever my Purists friends come for a visit. But for now, methinks a great car has become my ultimate daily driver.
Cheers and live well!
