What exactly do the dials at the left side of the PET indicate when I'm speaking to someone?

I picked up a used copy of this beautiful little game sans manual, so I'm not certain whether or not there's SUPPOSED to be a manual or not - I therefore apologize in advance if I should know this already 'cause it's in there.

Those dials are the bot's cellpoint settings. There is a sculpture room where you can adjust them so the bot's will be in a more helpful mood. Talk to all of the bots, and they will give you clues, some good and some bad.
