Whatever happened to spirited but polite discussions?

We always get insulted and ridiculed when we post messages to which others have strong reactions. I know it's against the concept of this message board, but that's the way it is. I shall continue to post messages, but this board seems to have the most diatribe-hurling environment of any I use.
