Censorship is a response by closed minded Americans to the violence and profanity with
music and television in todays world. It is what most parents fight for, because they want
to make this country a place where everyone has the same beliefs and everyone must
watch the same type of movie or listen to the same type of music. They will argue against
it, but the truth is they do not want freedom. They kill freedom, and make profanity seem
like it came straight from the devil himself. These people want control, they want all of us
to follow them in their exact beliefs and if we don’t do it we are “evil” and will end up in a
place of fire and brimstone they call hell.
Their first argument would be that censoring violence on television or profanity on the
radio will keep children from what they call “bad” things. They would say that it will make
their children more violent and that the incedent at Columbine High School could be
repeated. What I have to say to this is quite simple. They’re full of crap. They say it keeps
kids from being violent and if a child watches Barney he won’t pick up a gun but if he
watches a film like Die Hard or The Matrix he will. It is not the fault of the movies. Not
the slightest bit. The kid first of all must be a little messed up before he watches the movie
if he’s going to take a gun to school and kill thirteen people. If the parents would not keep
guns at home or they kept their kids busy so they wouldn’t have time to try to find guns
then it wouldn’t happen. But they are too busy going on dates and paying minimum
attention to their kids. Maybe if hese so-called parents watched over their kids better they
wouldnt have to worry about the movies and music. They’d see that the movie was bad
and say they couldn’t watch it or say no they couldn’t listen to that music. Instead what
they do is enjoy their own lives while the child watches films filled with violence and then
the parents blame the movie. It’s wrong.
I never did get what people saw wrong about profanity in music. Yes, I do admit it is
crude and vulgar, but it never hurt anybody. Someone saying the “f” word never caused
someone else to fall down dead. So what is it people find offensive? The elderly people of
America would say that they never talked like that when they were kids. Well they have to
come to their senses and realize things have changed within the last sixty years. You can’t
change that. But vulgar language never hurt anybody and I don’t see why people take
offense to others saying it. If they do not like it then they themselves do not need to say it
and if they’re around a person who says it alot they can politely ask them to stop. It is no
reason to censor it on television or music on the radio. I have refrained from buying cd’s
from Wal-Mart because they’re all edited and it angers me. They take offense to the
language, well I take offense to the censorship but they don’t seem to give a damn. They’ll
just laugh in my face about it.
Some places censor cd’s because they’re afraid people may buy it and take offense to it.
The same goes for movies. This should not happen because the person buying it should
find out what is in it before purchasing so they will know if they’ll be offended or not.
There was a woman recently who purchased a movie called Violent New Breed and she
saw it and she took great offense to it. I agree the movie is politically incorrect, don’t get
me wronghowever it’s a very good movie, but if the woman doesn’t like that type of
movie why did she buy it in the first place? Yes it’s a movie about evil and demons and yes
she was a good christian woman so wouldn’t it make sense to read the plot of the film
before purchasing to know what it’s about? But no she just buys it, watches it, gets
offended, and then blames the distributers for releasing “filth” that would corrupt anyone
who watches it! Excuse my sarcasm but lady get a life!
I do not think that the people who make these cd’s and movies would put something in
it that the directors or musicians did not feel necessary. So another one of my arguments is
that it ruins the true art of what it stands for if it is subject to censorship. I think all music
is art, no matter what it is, it is only people expressing their feelings and opinions, if
people don’t like it then why buy it? The same goes for movies, it’s art. I cannot hate any
form of music or movies because I cannot hate any form of personal expression. Personal
expression is what makes America a free country and that shouldn’t be taken away. But
when things are censored it takes away the freedom we gained 300 years ago and it also
takes away the true art of the movie or music that people worked very hard on to make.
There was an incident about a year ago where a mother took her son into the grocery
store while he was wearing a Marilyn Manson t-shirt that had the “f” word printed on the
back. On their way out of the store a police officer stopped them and began asking people
walking out of the store if they found it offensive. All but one person laughed and said no, the other man preached about how this seventeen year-old wearing the shirt would burn in
hell. The officer arrested the teen and a court date was set where the punishment would be
decided. What kind of a society is this turning into when clothes are even beginning to get
banned? There have been several other incidences in England where people would be
wearing band shirts and be arrested because they had vulgar things to say. As I said once
before, if the people don’t like the shirts they don’t have to wear them and they don’t have
to look at them. I don’t think government figures should have the right to stop people
from wearing the clothes they prefer and to just have a good time doing it.
So as a final thought all I can say is censorship needs to be banned in the United States
if not throughout the entire world. The government needs to rid us all of censorship, and
give back are freedom, which is freedom of speech.
