I use plywood or cardboard, depending on the size needed. For a small basic house, I use a 12" x 12" piece of cardboard.
For my larger houses, I use a piece of 3/8" plywood or 1/4" MDF wood (a type of wood/stuff that has some kind of white laminent on the surface).
I've heard that some people use styrofome, but I've found plywood to be cheaper and available in many sizes...square and even round!
