I have also recently returned (with Partner, Janet Bain) from the competition in Ashville. This is my first attempt at gingerbread (partner has done a couple before) and our first ever competition. We were thrilled to have placed in the top 10 on our first entrance.
We had the advantage (coming from Connecticut)of my brother living only 5 minutes from the Grove Park Inn. We made all the components in CT and drove them to North Carolina. We then spent 3 days assembling the parts and doint the decorating. (with some disasters during those days!)
It was gruelling but fun and we plan on attending again next year.
We agree that the professionals and amateurs should be separated. We also think the judging needs to be done differently. It just took too long.
