Question about St. Andrews pattern

I'm attempting to construct a St. Andrews Gingerbread House from the pattern I printed from frankysattic.home.comcast.net etc., and find the main house side walls are 11-1/2 inches tall while the meeting edges of the house front are 11 inches. If I match the bottoms of the 4 sides, I think I'm going to have trouble fitting the roof. I've seen some patterns with up to 1/4 inch difference, and filled those with icing, but 1/2 inch is going to leave quite a gap. This pattern has a gable over the porch that has the same slant as the roof, so the roof needs to fit both, and in the photo the pillars "supporting" the gable are stated to be 12 inch peppermint sticks, so I'm inclined to increase the height of the front/back pieces to match the sides. OR, is there a reason the sides would be that much taller, and what do I do to fill the gap?
Thanks. Dee
