royal vs. decorating icing

I plan to use royal icing to hold the walls together for support, etc, but as far as decoration goes (such as around the windows or landscaping) would it be better to use a less-stiff icing? Or will a less stiff icing not keep as well? I need the house to keep at least a month. Thanks!
