I did some research and some experiments with a product I found.
Good old fashion Shellac worked the best.
Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac, it says wright on the can thats it's non-toxic and hypoallergenic. I got it at a local ACE Hardware.
I had some gingerbread dough left over so I baked off two pieces in equal size, I treated one with this product,(2coats) both sides and let them set on the countertop. The treated one held up great even with the humidifier on. Another thing I found out was that royal icing seemed to stick to the treated piece better.
