Colored Siding

What do you use for the colored siding on your houses? I'm guessing it is either colored royal icing or colored gumpaste? Can I thin down royal icing and just "paint" it on?

BTW, I won $500 first place in Dayton's GB house contest last year. I used the pattern from Collette Peter's Christmas Cookbook. This year I'm trying to appeal to the locals' sense of city pride and am attempting to replicate an historic home downtown, on which the siding is white. Not sure how to go about that. Hope you can help!
