Crumbly Dough that won't work

Help! I've got an easy recipie that has 1 C Molases, 1 C sugar, 1 C. Shortening. Once that's heated, I add Baking Soda, Salt, Cinnimon, Ginger & Nutmeg. Then I am supposed to add in 4 1/2 to 5 cups of flour.
I've done it twice now and have run out of ingrediants to try another batch. I keep ending up with a crumbly mess that won't stick together. First time I used a mixer with the dough hooks and it was the worst. Second time I did it by hand with a wooden spoon and things looked great until the last cup of flour whent in. I tried working it by hand on the counter outside the bowl and it didn't look very consistent. I can get it into a ballish kind of heap but don't see how I'll ever get to anthing I'll be able to roll out. I've gone to great lenghts to make a stand, built the template, put a light in the stand, etc. If I can't get this dough part worked out I don't see how I'll get to make this house. I've already purchased everything to make it and I am really stuck.
Please help! Frustrated and feeling helpless, Simone.
