Giving Thanks

This is the time of year that in America everyone just sort of recaps on all that they are thankful for. There's a lot of background concerning the Holiday of Thanksgiving, and what it means to different people.

I know it has to do with the Pilgrims coming to America and meeting with the native americans who showed them how to plant and cultivate ect. When it was all done and the food was prepaired they all sat down together and had a grand feast.

(at least this is what has been taught in schools here)..there could be much more to it.

As for being thankful...I just thought this would be a nice place to list some things that you're thankful for...

November 27 2002, 6:43 AM

T is for turkey on Thanksgiving Day,
H is for "Hurry, I'm hungry!" we say.
A is for Auntie, she works and she mends,
N is for Native American friends.
K is for kitchen, the oven's on low,
S is for silverware, set in a row.
G is for Grandma, the one we love most,
I is for inside, where we're warm as toast.
V is for vegetables, eat them we try,
I is for icecream on top of the pie.
N is for never do we have enough dressing,
G is for Grandpa, who gives thanks for our blessings.

Most Americans celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday every November.
Being a Native American ...
I look at the “Thanks Giving holiday” in a totally different light then most.
I don’t do the traditional thanksgiving turkey day feast which supposedly is handed down from the days that the pilgrims and the Native Americans all sat down together to celebrate friendship and mutual lives of well being and plenty.

Pahhhhhhhhhh!!!!! ..... ~ spits ~

But ......
Everyday ....in my opinion is an excellent day to give thanks for what the Great Spirit has given us!!!
And perhaps .... this is the appropriate season to wonder if there is a difference between being thankful and giving thanks.

Thank you.
These two words are among the most important .... and appreciated in any language.
Someone doing a good deed, is often satisfied to hear "thank you" as the only reward.
Isn’t it sad that the words are said so seldom??

Gratitude is the mother of all virtues.
That makes sense doesn’t it???
Gratitude ...... A grateful attitude-inspires other good attitudes.
It's hard to have a bad attitude when you are feeling grateful.

Ingratitude is probably the most common of the negative emotions.
It is easier to feel pity, than feel appreciation.
It seems easier to criticize than compliment.
Griping, grumbling and being grouchy are just doing what comes naturally. Unfortunately .... they are part of our negative, self-centered natures.

It seems people rarely say thank you.
And I wonder what holds them back.
We should have developed the habit of expressing gratitude by the time we‘re old enough to talk.

Most people I suppose .... probably regard themselves as being properly thankful.
If they really are full of thanks, that's wonderful!!!
But thankfulness must be expressed to others to be worth much.
Giving thanks is much better than just being thankful.
Giving thanks is good for both parties!!!
The giver and the receiver.
And while thankfulness tends to be passive.
Thanks - giving ... is active.
“Thanks” are something that need to be given away ....
Making everyone richer.
Note that America’s national holiday “IS” called Thanksgiving Day .....
NOT - “Be Thankful Day”

To me .....
Most Thanksgiving Day celebrations involve little thankfulness....
Much less giving thanks!!
For many .... the holiday has become known as Turkey Day.
Characterized more by gluttony than gratitude.
Meanwhile .... people in poor, undeveloped countries look on the United States as incredibly rich and self-indulgent,
Spoiled!!!
Instead of thankful as it should be ... for its abundance, comforts and conveniences.

We should be thankful for all we've been given!!
And express it!!!
Shouldn’t “this” be what Thanksgiving Day is about??
But why only do it on one day in the year!!!

Remember to be thankful for all your blessings.
Do you express it?
Tell your family and friends how much you appreciate them???
Do you remember to give the greatest share of credit and praise to the Great Spirit???
Who is the Creator and Giver of all blessings???

Let's try to make every day, a day of giving thanks!!
A thanks-giving day!!
I'm going to honestly try harder this coming year ..... what about you???
Thanks for your time and patience as I ramble

The Art of Being Thankful

November 30 2002, 1:38 PM

You know .....
Most of us are quicker to complain than to give thanks.

There’s honestly an art to being “Thankful”
And like any other art .... some may seem to be more naturally talented at it then others ... but the bottom line is that if you learn the art ... and then practice it ... you too can become a true artist in the art of “Thankfulness”
And tell me honestly now ...
Would that be such a bad thing????

Be Thankful

November 30 2002, 1:50 PM

I came across this and absolutely loved it!!!
And I'm thinking that there's no one I would rather share it with then all my friends here in our Faery Garden!!!
I hope you all enjoy it as much as I have!!

Be Thankful

Be thankful that you don't already have
everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be
to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don't know something,
for it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations,
Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge,
Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes,
They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you're tired and weary,
Because it means you've made an effort.

It's easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks.

Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles, and they will become your blessings.
