Has anyone used one of those hairsticks that look like a wooden clothsepin?

I mean they're two-pronged. I ordered one for my daughter. It came yesterday, and it is beautifully made. But, when I tried it in my hair, I wasn't sure it would stay. My daughter's hair (She's at college, so I will get it to her) is much thicker than mine, so I was wondering how she would use it. The space between the prongs is very narrow.

Do you have to have more than one of them for it to work right?
