Have a question regarding barrettes.....

I have a few barrettes that have springs in them. I am not sure if that is what it is called but the clasp clicks together and a piece of metal is pushed into the barrette to hold the hair. I have these foam things that look like pipe insulation but fit around the spring of the barrette. It is suppose to keep the spring from breaking hair. My questions are:

1. Is this safe? I haven't had any problems, but should I dare keep it up?
2. If they are, where can I get more of them? I got these at Ulta and have not been able to find them again.
3. If not, how can I wear the barrettes without breaking my hair?

Thanks bunch ya'll.

There is much to be said for the
clips made in France.

I can take any given barrette out of my
hoard of barrettes box without looking at the
clasp, and can tell you when I take it out of my hair
where it was made.

The clips made in France are soooo nice to my hair.
They just slide right out, no hair caught up.

The cheapo clips are those you sort of have
to drag out of your hair, while each strand caught
up in the cheap clip is screaming for mercy.

Most definitely when you can,
buy Made In France clips on your barrettes.

Kimmyc has beautiful barrettes with
clips from France, but the photos don't do
them justice.

I thought they would be cheap tin, but
oh, no, they are nice, and heavy, but
not heavy, if that makes any sense.

I was very pleased with the entire transaction.
All five of them!

First, if you're not noticing any problems, you'r probably ok. When a barrette pulls your hair, you know it!
I can't use anything with springs, my hair leaps into things that might tear it away. An alternative for you are spring-free barrettes, at tenderheaded.com.
Also, I don't know what they're called, but I switched from barrettes entirely to those one-piece things that click into place. Anybody know what I'm talking about? If you really want details on those, let me know and I'll post a pic.

You may recognize them, they're getting pretty common. This solved my barrette problems. The ONLY thing about them is I'm always looking for bigger ones. Hope you can find them, and please let me know if you can't.

I also coat the clasp with several coats of nail polish, (clear)

so the barrette doesn't "cut" my hair as I wear it. Sometimes, I've also covered the metal clasp with yarn, kind of "crocheted" it on, and that works good too.
I just don't like taking chances with hair toys.

Your barrettes sound like the foam thing would protect your hair.

the style of clip you are describing is a french clip. There are French Clips (capitalized) which refers to french clips that say Made In France. They tend to be MUCH smoother than the clips which look similar but are not made in France. Does that make sense?

I've felt some of the French Clips (Made in France) and they are significantly smoother than the cheapos (I inspected the France Luxe French Clips only). They would probably be perfectly fine for normal to thick strands of hair, but for my fragile hair they are still probably too rough. But I am still considering getting one of those really thin, long French Clips. They are just so cool! But I'll be inspecting a LOT of them before making my purchase!

Now, for the coating/covering . . . you need LisaJaney! She can help ya!

I have taken....

clear fingernail polish and coated all edges of them. I also have been known to use my grinding "stone" (I wish I knew what those parts were CALLED) on my Dremel and smooth the metal FIRST, then cover with clear nail polish.

I also bought a bunch (a gross, actually) of plastic spring-barrettes so that I could put my hair-bow barrettes onto plastic. They are nice, but I have to put them in a certain way or they want to pinch one or two strands of hair in the joint. That's probably safer for my hair (one or two hairs as a sacrifice) than the old metal barrettes were (they were cheapies; JoAnn fabric, four for a buck)

There you have it. Yes, Sister, I am a fount of wisdom! (yeah, right. You'd get smarter things out of my DOGS' mouths, I know)

Hugs to you,
