everybody takes vitamins.
Yesterday my daughter asked me: isn't it too much for your kidney to try to flash out all extra stuff you put in?

What are your thoughts on it? I would hate to screw my kidneys (or something else for that matter), while growing hair...

Thanks a lot.

My take on that ...

If you have a perfectly balanced diet you don't need the extra vits. But as modern soils often lack nutrients (or veggies are grown on cotton wool soaked in artificial fertiliser) and cattle is fed meat and bone meal, you just can't expect your food to have all you need. So unless you really overdo it with the supplements, you don't get "too much", just "enough", i.e. what you are supposed to get if there was still proper food available.

I bet there are way more pollutants in your food that your body has to deal with than those few extra vitamins. The ones you should be careful with are the oil soluble vitamins though (E, A, D), cause excess of those can't be flushed out of the body as easily.

Cheers,
Madeleine

My thoughts

Everything in moderation
and use common sense

It has taken me almost 2 years to get
my vit routine just where I like it.
I can tell if something is causing me
a problem or not.
I have been out of a good many
of my vits and used that 6 weeks to
rest my body.

If you are not sure take your vits every
other day or not on the weekends.
I remember reading that the RDA on vits
are very low. However I am careful to
make sure I am under and do not take anything
over the RDA.

I hope this helps

Angel Hugs and Love

I thought that the vits in pills aren't absorbed by the body as well as liquid vits.  Something like 25% of the vit is absorbed and the rest is wasted and flushed out of the body.  So to compensate, vit companies make the pills with more than what's actually absorbed into the body and the kidneys have to deal with the rest.  Of course we all have different metabolic rates, so your absorption is different than mine.  Which is why some people get knocked out by cold meds, and others don't.

I'd like to know if there's any validity to this claim.

Anyways, I'm not a doctor nor do I play one on tv....

As Madeline said, Vitamins A, D and E are the only ones you can overdose on. And all the others flush out daily if you are hydrated enough. My OB put me on two regular over the counter multivitamins when I was pregnant, said prenatals didn't have enough good stuff in them, said take two every day. I have been doing it ever since and my oldest is over 22 years old!!!!

Thank you, Karrinne! But I guess what my daughter was

asking was all this extra washing - does it tax my kidney too much?
I guess if you are doing vits for at least 22 years, it must be OK

Thanks again.

if you have no previous kidney malfunctions,r/o

then you should have no problems. Ususally any kidney problems start out as decreased or increased outputs, which are pretty noticeable to the average person.
