Ok, I know this might sound like a dumb question, but please bear with me as I AM a newbie to pulling.

When you go out and check the track with a screw driver or other such prod. What conditions are you looking for?

I scuff the track with the side of my shoe just to see how packed it is. And I try not to look too obvious. I hate hard packed tracks. If they are going to smooth and pack the track like that, we might as well go out on Main Street and pull.

What your looking for is

Just how easy the screwdriver goes into the track and how deep ... if you can sink it say 6" then it's a loose track if say it only goes in 1" then it's hard ... You also are looking for differants in the track .. say 4' from the one side you find it loose but at the 5' mark it gets harder. then you'd try and put your tires on that 5' mark and stay away from the 4' mark. Finding that fine line could put your truck out the end..
