OK after 7 years of pulling I finally have More power in my 528 then I know what to do with ...and it cost Just under $18,000 to get it ...

Now my dilemma :

How far Should one travel to get to a Pull .. With Diesel going for 2.99 per gal.

And what amount of money should there be in the purse too pull ... Paying out the top 3 spots ..

Part 2 will come next ...

re...how far

Well, I just started this year, and I figured I'd go to all the pulls that were feasable to drive my street stocker to. This came out to three. Now, next year, I'll probably trailer the truck and hit at least double that amount. This is all based on available funds. BUT, for a guy like you who has $18,000 for an engine...might think traveling 600 miles per weekend is just fine. And believe me, If I could afford it, I'd do the same thing, because I'm hooked on pullin'(no pun intended) What I'm getting at is if you still have the bills paid and the wife happy...whats keeping you from traveling however far you want, as long as you're having great fun and maybe making a few bucks!

re How far

I think that's a decision that only you can make. I have traveled as far as 3 hours to make a pull, but after winning a whopping $25 for 1st place, I decided it wasn't worth it. Now if I had a shot at say $100 or more than I would definitely go that far.

For me, with my daughter involved with horses, and traveling to shows with her, it kind've limits the amount of time I can devote to pulling. When the kids are supporting themselves, then I can I can devote my free time to pulling.

Part 2 ...

June 28 2006, 8:16 PM

"hookedonpullin" From the Ford 460 message board Wrote.
This is something I've pondered the past couple years. It costs twice as much to pull and be competitive as it did 9 years ago when I started, but it pays the same for a win which wasn't squat 9 yrs ago. I think it depends on your priorities and financial status. I know a lot of pullers whose wives left them because going pulling was number one priority even if they had to go hungry for the next month. I love pulling but I'm not going to lose my family or go bankrupt doing it. I say, if you can afford it and your not neglecting other responsibilities then go for it. I look back at my years of pulling and the best part isn't the wins and full pulls its the friendships I have with people I would have never met if I didn't pull. Good luck."

Thank You Hookedonpullin...
Here's part two of my delimma..

My kids are all grown up and out of the house. My current wife I met after I got into truck pulling and she knows I have the urge to pull bad.
I have plenty of fund to travel the country if I wanted.
I'm currently pulling in Four Clubs, Three of which pay pretty good.
But the one club I really enjoy pulling at, And that cost me the most too pull at, pays little to nothing..
But it was this little line of yours that's makes it worth it everyday.

""its the friendships I have with people I would have never met if I didn't pull.""

Thank You

are you planning

June 28 2006, 8:43 PM

maybe traveling even farther? Like maybe out of Wisconsin to Pull? Maybe you could come to our next pull in Hemmingford Neb. in August(remember its for the people you meet not the winnings or the money you spend to get there)just kidding, but it would be cool to see you at a pull. But I almost like the traveling as much as the pulling. You-know hauling the truck on the trailer, everybody giving you thumbs up. For me ,the best thing about traveling to truck pulls is my son always goes.

What I mean by cost the most to pull at is the fuel to get there.. it's a 3 hour drive there and back and a full tank of Fuel.. $65.00 fill up plus $20.00 per class entry fee ..

Then there's the unseen cost of pulling .. 5 Gal of racing fuel.. $43.50 and any Broken parts ....

around here

3 hours is what i go to every pull, one way. One thing our new org has going for us, is that all the money we make goes into the points fund, and is paid back to the pullers. all classes pay 5 spots, and i think winner takes 400 to 200. Our longest was 6 hours one way.

Some thoughts

July 8 2006, 10:04 AM

I pulled for 15 years, been outa it for three and gettin back in - the bug once it bites is like a tick - u aint never gettin the pincers out
First and formost - if your only goin pulling for the money - you'll go broke - there is never enough payout.
Our club always paid back to every place so you at least got sumthing. Our purses were $1100.00 per hook back then.
Now if you truly want to run everywhere and you have the support of your family (you need it) then get out n get yurself a bunch of sponsors to make it worthwhile.
Thats where the money is.
Hell even when I was just a street puller at the local run what ya brungs I had sponsors.
We banked about $5000 a year if we didnt break anything.
How far do you run - how serious are you? We travelled as much as 6-7 hours one way to get to a hook when we were chasin the points.
Remember that support I talked about - ya need it for the long rides home when ya broke, when ya almost made it, and especially when ya won.
Sponsors - ya need em too for the same reason - few can support a points run outa their own pockets cuz ya gotta be able to fix whatever broke in less tha na day or two so yur ready for the next pull.
It becomes a full time job.....with zero thanx
Yah gotta absolutely love the sport - and if so - that will dictate the lenghts and expense you are willing to go to.

Count me in - lmao, rotf, lol
