Bad luck

Man if it weren't for bad luck!!!! Last thursday one of my intake gaskets let go and started sucking air. Ok, I thought no problem, just yank the intake and replace the gaskets. So, last night I yanked the intake and found the cylinder leaking, well, when I was looking I noticed some aluminum shavings....bad news. We pulled the plugs, and they all had oil on them which means the rings never seated, so, tonight I get to yank the motor and pull it apart to see what's going on, and replace the rings after a cylinder honing. Hopefully that's all that is needed.

Not looking good

August 3 2006, 5:13 AM

Drained the oil out last night, and had large slivers of metal on the plug magnet, so this is not looking good. I'll know more when the engine builder gets it tore apart. Right now, I'm thinking a crank.

were the slivers in the top of the heads too? if so pull a valve spring and make sure its not weraing away the shims or head. been there done that. good thing gasket sets are only $40. after i tore mine down to find that i needed spring cups under the springs.

Officially done for the year!

August 3 2006, 4:54 PM

Well, it looks like I'm done for the year! Got the pan off, and assesed the carnage. Looks like the #4 connecting rod let go (eagle H beams at that). Don't know if the rod let go first or the ARP bolts, but the rod was in 2 pieces, and the bolts were broke in half. Trashed the block, and crank along with it. Good news is that it looks like the heads are ok other than replacing the 2 valves where they made light contact with the piston. So, now I'm looking for a block and crank.

Blue Thunder

August 7 2006, 9:17 AM

We have to run Cast Iron heads here. Do you or anyone else know where I could find a set of Blue thunder cast iron heads. If at all possible it would be nice to find the ones with the Cobra Jet exshaust ports.
P.S. Alan, sorry to hear about your bad luck. If it makes you feel any better mine hasn't been much better this year or last.

re Heads

Not sure about the Blue Thunder heads, but you can call Richard at Flow Technologies in Michigan 734-454-4190 for iron heads.

High Hopes

August 8 2006, 11:21 AM

Thanks Alan. I think these heads are like the Trick Flow A heads and require alot of custom parts. Not good for a simple head swap. But good heads. I was hoping someone out there may have a used set of the Blue Thunders. It has been several years since they made them. But was still hoping there were a set available. I have talked to most everyone I can in my area with no luck. I thought maybe some of you Ford guys might know of someone who used these heads in the past.
You may want to look on racingjunk.com for parts to fix your engine with. They have a bunch of stuff if you have never been there.

not likely

August 8 2006, 9:25 PM

The reason they didnt continueproduction was that the heads had terrible porosity. Few good sets hit the marketplace.
If yoru lucky enough to fond a set expect to pay lots as they are extremely rare and highly sought after.
I spent three years tryin to find a set and one came along , but $3000 askin.
Good luck

I would not be all in an uproar searching for these heads. They are only maginally better than CJ's if really any better at all. And with the factory stuff you will not have the porosity issues. But if you decide you really have to have set, I do know of a set that is a good set.

CJ vs Blu T

August 9 2006, 11:20 AM

I may be wrong. But I didn't think the Factory CJ's were very good. But I also don't remember seeing flow numbers on a set after they had good work done to them. Can you in lighten me any ???
I am now running a set of D3VE heads that have had alot of port work done. Which I feel are descent but are hurting the compression a good bit.
Any info anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.
PS. I know where I can get a set of bare CJs for an even grand.

Heads

August 9 2006, 7:54 PM

There is a forum for the 460's and a gentleman over there who is amazing with Ford heads, and his flow numbers for Ford cast vs aftermarket will astound you. Even some of the guys like Jon Kasse are talkin to Scott and gettin him to do work.
He has a web site too, called "In-car-nation" if memeory serves.
Last I recall he had a set of factory Cjs makin as much or more flow than the best "direct" bolt-on aftermarket stuff.

CJs

August 10 2006, 7:06 AM

I talked to the owner of Prices Motorsports and he said back when they flowed and ported heads. They were getting in the neighborhood of 300cfm on the exshaust side and somewhere around 375 to 390 on the intake. I forgot to ask him at what lift and how many inches of water.
Do you think the 1000 bucks is to steep for the CJ heads ?
Would you happen to have more info on how I can hook up with Scott that you mentioned earlier ?

re Flow numbers

August 10 2006, 7:52 AM

Here is a link that compares flow numbers on various heads.
http://p219.ezboard.com/ftruckpullsfrm19.showMessage?topicID=13.topic

Also, Scott Johnstons website is www.reincarnation-automotive.com

Scott does amazing work, and did my Dove "max effort" heads.

Re: re Flow numbers

August 11 2006, 3:02 PM

I have seen numbers into the 400's on CJ's but that is also one of those things(subjective). As far as work on those heads there is a guy in Missouri named Bret Powell or a guy in Kentucky named Charlie Evans. One of these 2 guys is where I would spend my money. Not trying to run down anybody else but these guys are proven on our style motors. By the way Bill is a pretty interesting fellow isn't he. I have a set of C8's he worked on a little.

re Heads

August 11 2006, 10:30 PM

I can't find the email Scott sent me, but I believe they were around 360/230 cfm. Scott was very helpfull, and he can tell you what he can get out of them. He said that my heads were the highest he had flowed, but that could've been a salesman talking too. My heads with Ferrea valves and a Victor port match was around $1600
